It may have been useful many years ago when people still used mainframes and there was actually a credible threat to the mainframe being hacked through a user account.
UNM will celebrate its 119th birthday today. Lobo Day festivities, which celebrate UNM's founding on Feb. 28, 1889, will take place in the SUB from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cate Wisdom, executive director of ASUNM's Lobo Spirit, said the festivities will resemble a birthday party.
A good deal came out of the Great Depression. The UNM Art Museum is marking the 75th anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal with "For the Greater Good: New Deal Art in New Mexico." It opened Tuesday. The exhibit explores art from the 1930s, when Roosevelt implemented the New Deal, a sequence of programs to help people recover from the Great Depression.
The UNM women's basketball team rebounded from a tough home loss to Utah by defeating BYU 55-45 on the road Tuesday. With the win, the Lobos improved to 15-12 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West Conference play. Dionne Marsh scored 17 points and moved into second place on UNM's all-time scoring list.
The campaign to ban smoking at UNM has had trouble picking up steam. In the fall, the Coalition for a UNM Smoke-Free Campus conducted a survey asking students if they wanted to ban smoking on Main Campus. Only 154 students took the survey, and about 52 percent of them wanted to ban smoking on campus.

Editor, As a young organic farmer in Albuquerque's South Valley, I am impressed with the strong leadership that UNM's Sustainability Studies Program has demonstrated with regard to healthy, sustainable and local food. Three of this program's numerous accomplishments are organizing the first-ever farmers' market on campus, supporting the development of Dragon Farm at South Valley Academy charter high school and initiating a statewide alliance of diverse stakeholders to cut greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and create a carbon-neutral local food shed.
Hobbs firefighters monitor remnants of grass blaze HOBBS (AP) - Firefighters on Tuesday monitored the remnants of a grass fire that burned more than 10,000 acres and threatened about 100 homes and businesses west of this southeastern New Mexico city. Editor, February - also celebrated as Black History Month - is coming to an end. For the past few years, we have celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday. What I find amazing is that when former President Ronald Reagan signed the bill creating the holiday, it took almost a decade before all 50 states recognized it.
UNM athletes are facing off against Mountain West Conference opponents on and off the field. The UNM Athletics Department, along with the United Blood Services, will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the SUB Ballroom. The drive is part of the Mountain West Conference's Rebuilding Lives initiative.
