Editor, I want to respond to Matthew Martinez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday suggesting that either the City of Albuquerque or UNM pay for students' parking passes, in addition to paying for student bus passes. The city is giving students free passes because it encourages more people to take the bus instead of driving, therefore making the roads and parking lots less crowded.
If you need an STI test or a flu shot but can't afford it, there is a free clinic on North Campus you can go to. The Stanford Public Health Office, at 1111 Stanford Drive N.E., offers STI screening, family planning and immunization services at no charge.
Editor, The elimination of University College, the consideration of which was reported in the Daily Lobo on Thursday, would be a major error. While students who have selected a major may well have higher graduation rates than those who have not, the notion that they succeed because they have selected a major early is decidedly moot.
There's more to the Student Health Center than waiting rooms and cold stethoscopes.
More than 400 cats from all over the world gathered in Albuquerque this weekend to compete for ribbons, prestige and bragging rights.
Editor, This Labor Day, I took the opportunity to reflect on the struggles that student and employee caregivers face at the University. On Sept. 5, an event will be held in Ballroom A of the SUB from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to organize people around policy issues that affect family-member employees and to celebrate a new state law (N.
Student Haseeb Kabir said mandatory student fees should go toward services all students can benefit from.
Editor, Sen. Larry Craig, an Idaho Republican, is responding to accusations of lewd conduct in an airport restroom. His crime is that he made a sexual hand gesture. There was no claim that money was discussed or that this was an issue of prostitution. Craig's response is that he is not gay and denies the allegations.
EL PASO - The first game of the season has been a dark cloud hanging over UNM the past couple years. Last year, the Lobos took a 17-6 loss to Division I-AA Portland State in the season opener.
If you're tired of the daily grind at UNM and want to get away for a semester, there's a program that can help you study at universities across Latin America and Spain.
Siobhan May Junior History Daily Lobo: What brings you to UNM? Siobhan May: I wanted to study German, and it's not offered at CNM. You can't even get a bachelor's from CNM. DL: What were your studies like before coming here? SM: I dropped out of high school at 16. Technically, I withdrew. ...
EL PASO - On paper, the UNM football team went to UTEP and gave the Miners a beating. Unfortunately, the Lobos couldn't take advantage of offensive opportunities and left El Paso on a somber note after a 10-6 loss Saturday.
Editor, I am offended by Jessica Stanton's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday, though I don't live in New Orleans. To look upon the poor of that city - many of whom can't move out due to their financial situation and cannot pay to renovate their homes or even afford the health care to fix their families - and suggest that the city is almost forgotten shows the attitude of so many in this country: "If it's broken, throw it away and get a new one.
Virginia Hampton just wants to move on after a robbery last week at Out ch'Yonda, the art space she helped found five years ago. "We're not going to focus on trying to find the person and catch them and bring them to justice," she said. "We're going to do art and hope the community can come together and help us."
Among the obscenities scribbled on the stalls in bathrooms around campus, you may find something you didn't expect - sexual solicitations from gay men. Users of Craigslist.com posted locations around the city for men to meet up and have sex in public.
Editor, Both Brandon Curtis and Austin Duus have misrepresented Richard Berthold's research record in their letters published in the Daily Lobo on Friday and Thursday, respectively. Berthold has published work in peer-reviewed journals since 1978, most notably the article Fourth Century Rhodes, which was published in the respected journal Historia Volume 29 (1980).
Editor, This is in response to Matthew Martinez's letter in the Daily Lobo on Friday asserting the need for free parking passes from UNM. UNM didn't appropriate millions for students who are too lazy to get a license to drive a car; it did so because with rising gas prices, many people can't afford the commute to school.
Staff report The UNM women's soccer team split two games in Oklahoma to start the 2007 season. On Friday, the Lobos lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to No. 20 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. Senior Terryn Granados scored the lone goal for UNM in the sixth minute.
