UNM cuts gas emissions

People can breathe easier on campus than they could six years ago, according to reports from the Physical Plant. Since the department began a $60 million project in 2000 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, UNM reduced nitrous oxide emissions by 86 percent, from 108 tons to 15 tons per year.

Council OKs teen center, disputes use of funding

City Council voted to renovate the former Ice House building to use for a cultural facility for teens, but there is debate on how the center and its programs should be funded, the city council president said. Debbie O'Malley said that although there are funding concerns, the council supports the initiative.

U.S. war machine causes shortages in resources

Editor, I am not shocked that Sens. Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman can't see the large drain on the United States oil supply caused by the armada of war machines the president has deployed in Iraq and around the world. All those tanks get about 5 miles per gallon; jet planes get even less; and Humvees are horribly bad, too.

Students say dorms don't get proper care

Student Erica Krause said the dorms wouldn't be a bad place to live if the University took better care of them. "I thought about living here next semester, but we're not now," she said. "We put up with too much, like roach killing and other problems." Krause lives in an apartment in the Student Residence Center with five students.

Israel Alliance's actions served to open dialogue

Editor, In response to Katryn E. Fraher's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, I would like to clarify the events detailed. Fraher claims that the UNM Israel Alliance defaced a presentation put up by the Salam Coalition in Smith Plaza on April 26. The SC constructed a representation of the wall being constructed by Israel consisting of a network of fences with vehicle-barrier trenches.

Consider all options before buying house in UNM area

Editor, I read with great interest the housing guide in Thursday's Daily Lobo. I completely agree that buying a home instead of renting is a financially sound decision that students should look into. I bought my first home near UNM seven years ago and have seen the value of the house more than double in that time - not a bad return for such a short period of time.

Emergency text service yet to be proven effective

Editor, On Friday, I noticed an Albuquerque Police Department Bomb Squad vehicle, a fire truck and police cars speeding to UNM. Obviously, this raised my curiosity concerning what was occurring on campus, especially with the recent shootings at Virginia Tech.

Bible-reading session was a violation of civil liberties

Editor, I find it extremely offensive that a Baptist student group was given permission by the Student Activities Center to set up a tent, co-opt the center of the Duck Pond and use a microphone to proselytize until Sunday night in a marathon Bible-reading session.

Dancers ready to take the lead

If you're a good dancer, you're good in relationships, said to Millie Leahy, a UNM dance instructor. "The skills it takes to partnership dance are the same skills it takes to have a relationship," she said. "At any given moment, you can only have a leader and a follower. You can't have two leaders at the same moment, for the same reason they don't have two steering wheels in the car."

Computer screen to big screen

Being an Internet celebrity sometimes leads to greater things. Three friends from Berkeley, Calif., formed a comedy trio in 2001 called the Lonely Island, making short films and posting them on YouTube. The comedy shorts got so popular that Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer had the chance to audition for "Saturday Night Live." They are now on the cast.

Finding salvation, peace through art

When artist Paul Bartlett RÇ graduated from Cal Tech with a degree in physics, he decided to express the beauty of science through art. "On the outside, the transition from science to art was a dramatic transition," he said. "Internally, there is a great similarity - at least with the work I do. It was a fairly smooth progression internally."

Greek life provides more than just a place to live

Editor, I agree with Director of Residence Life Randy Boeglin that living on campus is an experience you will never forget. Residing on campus is beneficial to one's academics and social life. While the dorms do offer great amenities, there are other options for living on campus.
