Editor, While attending a lab last week, I realized where this University's priorities are focused. The lab instructor said that each student was to reuse a single pair of latex gloves for dissections. When asked why the class was instructed to reuse our gloves, the instructor said that the department cannot afford to allow students to constantly change dirty gloves.

Getting chased out of Mexico by German Mennonite drug smugglers was Sam Quinones' last experience as a freelance writer there. Quinones, a Los Angeles Times reporter who covers immigration issues, lived in Mexico from 1994 to 2004, traveling to villages and hearing stories of the effects of immigration on the border region. He spoke about his book - Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream, available from UNM Press - on Thursday in the SUB. German Mennonites immigrated to Chihuahua and formed a colony outside a village called CuauhtÇmoc, Quinones said. While in CuauhtÇmoc, Quinones said he interviewed a cousin of the largest smuggler at the time. Quinones said he was chased out of the country after he gave the cousin his business card and said he would like to interview the smuggler.

The REACH slate dominated the undergraduate student government elections Wednesday, according to unofficial results provided by the ASUNM Elections Commission. The official results will be released today at 5 p.m. The slate won the presidency, the vice presidency and nine of 10 contested Senate seats.
Students who need a summer job should find one that will complement their education, said Ron Martinez, director of the financial aid office. "The ideal job would be something that's related to what they're studying or an area they have a specific interest in," he said. The Student Employment Office advertises summer jobs for students, including on- and off-campus employment. The office has a job locator - a person who goes into the business community and tries to find jobs for students. "What we do is provide the information, and the student contacts the employer directly to interview," Martinez said. The office posts the jobs on its Web site at Unm.edu/~wsestudy/.
Last week, Iran ended its 13-day hostage-taking of British sailors when it finally agreed to send them back to Britain. During the ordeal, Iranian leaders acted as all other Islamic fundamentalists we've seen since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, parading their hostages in the global media, creating a facade that the hostages were not being harmed and making demands on the Western world. It's a picture we've become far too comfortable seeing.

Editor, I salute the UNM Humanist Society for holding a blood drive Tuesday. Supporting efforts such as donating blood falls loosely into what, as a Catholic, I would call a corporal act of mercy. While donating blood is not specifically enumerated, activities like visiting the sick and feeding the poor are expected to be performed by Catholics as part of our faith.
Editor, This is in response to a letter on Tuesday from a disappointed student, uninterested in voting in the ASUNM elections today. Student apathy regarding ASUNM's lack of proper representation is understandable, but it is not acceptable. There is a reason ASUNM has been ineffective for so long.

Aside from the desert, writing and my family, the greatest love of my life has always been music. Music has always been there for me - providing lyrics to justify my adolescence, soundtracks for my friendships, and a major source of relaxation, energy and catharsis. And usually, my favorite music is made by musicians willing to evolve - bands like Radiohead and Wilco - bands that change, play around and push themselves to do more.
