Editor, In Tuesday's issue of the Daily Lobo, Lucia Fronterotta took issue with UNM's decision to close Zia Lot and Parking and Transportation Services' justification for doing so. In objecting to the decision, Fronterotta alluded to several common misconceptions about UNM's shuttle system.
Performing at Rockstar Karaoke Extravaganza is a relief for UNM student Justin Stewart. "Everyone needs something to get through the work week," he said. "This is a great way to get through it."
Chao Sio, a Kenyan lecturer at UNM who was arrested for an expired visa, said she is not going to fight deportation. She expects to leave for Kenya on Monday. Sio is not going to appeal, because during the proceedings, she would not be released from the Cornell Companies detention center where she is being held. "It would take forever to pursue this in court," she said in an interview at the center Wednesday. "I'm not going to sit here and wait for that. I'm just ready to get it over with." Sio was arrested Sept. 14 by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents. She had applied for political asylum but was denied. She told her lawyer to file an appeal, but her lawyer left the state and dropped Sio's case without telling anyone, she said.
Editor, I am writing in response to the article about the Greeks published in Wednesday's Daily Lobo. I think it would be nice to show the good things that fraternities and sororities do among the UNM and Albuquerque communities, but in the real world, that is not newsworthy.
Jonathan Overpeck, a University of Arizona professor, said the planet is in danger if people don't take steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Overpeck is the director of the Institute for the Study of the Planet Earth at the University of Arizona. He gave a presentation Wednesday about the greenhouse effect and climate change at the fourth annual New Mexico Drought Summit at the Continuing Education North Building. The greenhouse effect is when gases, mainly carbon dioxide, get trapped in the atmosphere and cause the planet to heat up, he said. Carbon dioxide levels have been rising rapidly since the last half of the 20th century, Overpeck said.
Anyone who wants to preorder a Sony PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii can forget about it. EB Games and its sister store, GameStop, blew through their entire preorder stock for systems within hours of announcing availability. Neither the Wii nor the PlayStation 3 is available.
Editor, I am writing in response to Robert Ortiz's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. I agree with Ortiz that it is not simply Christianity that holds negative views toward homosexuality, but I disagree with just about everything else he said. The reason that David Gonzalez primarily targeted Christians in his letter on Monday is because the greatest opposition toward the gay community comes from the Christian community.
Editor, In response to Deadra Wright's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, what Constitution is she reading? Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution does it grant or imply a person's right to smoke. Wright may have the right to buy cigarettes, but the right to smoke them publicly is a gray area.
On the morning of Oct. 5, 2004, dark clouds hung above the brown desert mountains just west of Socorro. The day was warm, the sky was gray, and by noon, there were tornado warnings.
Jeffrey M.R. Duncan-Andrade, assistant professor at San Francisco State University, said urban schools in America are doing what they're designed to do - perpetuate inequality.
Former U.S. diplomat John Brady Kiesling, who resigned in 2003 to protest the invasion of Iraq, spoke to students Tuesday about foreign relations.
Editor, I am writing in response to Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about the volunteer who asked her boyfriend if he wanted to register to vote. While I agree that the volunteer's comment was unprofessional, I don't think it was completely unfounded.
Angel City Outcasts don't just shun the mainstream, they assault it. "It's not my cup of tea," vocalist Alex Brugge said. "I like rock 'n' roll and punk with some balls in it."
COSAP, a campus organization dedicated to substance-abuse prevention, is hosting Red Ribbon Day today to raise awareness about alcoholism and the dangers of drunken driving.
Actors have this funny way of surprising everyone. Tom Hanks went from comedy to being a serious actor with "Philadelphia." Bruce Willis showed his introspective side in "The Sixth Sense." It is apparently Leonardo DiCaprio's turn.
Editor, Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo missed the point. Nonvoters do not accomplish more than voters. The reason people get so annoyed with nonvoters is that not voting accomplishes nothing. Sure, the Democrats and the Republicans suck. Alternatives? The Democrats effectively painted the Green Party as a spoiler to maintain their market share of the voters, and the Republicans offered money to the Green Party, effectively backing up the Democratic claim that the Green Party was tied to Republicans.
