Musician's lyrics keep us guessing

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo There are various ways to write a song. Typically, one starts with a melody and builds it up from there, or he or she writes out some lyrics and tries to make musical sense out of them. Songs are also written cooperatively when a band gets together and a member starts playing something that the other musicians respond to.

Is water waste legal?

Editor, The Daily Lobo article last week on UNM challenging water fines was rather enlightening. On the contrary to what the Director of the Physical Plant says, I have noticed frequent water waste on this campus since I began working here, not just "on occasion" as she claims. One need only walk along ...

Unwelcome Class Visit

I'm a teaching assistant in the English department here at UNM. I've been warned about the problems I could encounter while teaching English 101. But I was neither warned nor had I anticipated an incident that took place in my classroom on the morning of Friday the 18th. I was getting ready to ...

Letter: Low testosterone causes male violence and anger

Editor, The cause of male violence is not too much testosterone. The cave drawings in Europe made 5,500 to 9,500 years ago show a more peaceful way of living with relatively few scenes of men raping or killing. These cave drawings depict a more equal and fair society than ours, where women were not under men - men and women lived as partners.

Urban Sprawl

Editor, I am somewhat safe here in the University Area, pretty well impervious to the shoddy construction of new subdivisions. The houses here are old and beautiful, each one unique. What are we doing here, turning this place into another Phoenix? Have you seen the sprawl there? The East Coast ...

The Ouch in Vouchers

Dane Roberts speaks of "the impossibility of standardizing our public schools" and believes "the state shouldn't assume the task of defining how or what each kid should learn." Roberts imagines an ideal world in which "principals could choose teachers who match their educational beliefs. And teachers ...

Give canned food to taste the music

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo You can call punk rock a lot of things, just don't call it heartless. On Friday night the Launchpad is hosting a benefit show as a thank-you to the under-21 crowd who stood up to Mayor Chavez's proposal to stop all-ages shows.

Touson reveals personal stereotypes

The infamous remarks of Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry are obviously stereotypical and not based on fact. However, in her delayed reaction to his comments, Michelle Touson revealed some personal stereotypes that are equally unacceptable. In the quoted text of coach DeBerry, he at no point ...

Christmas

There once was a Day! There once was a special day people called Christmas. December 25 was chosen in 336 AD so that Christians could celebrate the birth of a special little boy. They chose this day because it was also the day of Saturnalia (a pagan holiday). Why this day? There are many guesses, ...

Pentagon admits to using chemical weapons in Iraq.

Editor If 65% of Daily Lobo readers believe the Commander In Chief of the US Armed Forces lied to start a war, I hope they have the courage to stand up and do something about it. For over a week I have been following the report that US Forces used Chemical Weapons against Iraqis in last years territorial ...

biased polls

Your internet poll concerning Karl Rove and Scooter Libby is horribly biased. All of the questions imply that there was wrong-doing on the part of each man, and that it had to do with leaking the identity of a CIA operative. According to the special prosecutor, Rove and Libby have done nothing to ...

Arafat's corruption and support of terrorism overlooked

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the letter by Shafeek Kubha titled "Arafat's peace-keeping endeavors overlooked.' It is hard for me to comprehend the use of words such as 'a freedom fighter, a liberator, and a man of integrity' to describe a man such as Yasser Arafat. Here are several examples ...

Serious Missinformation

To whomever it may concern, In Monday's article about the march for the petroglyphs, my opinion was placed in half of the article and it sounded as if I was leading the show. Vendors get crafty at fair

by Sunnie Redhouse Daily Lobo Former UNM staff employee Ruth Marciano had always wanted to work on her art and sell it at fairs, but she never had the time because she was busy with her career, she said. On Wednesday, she had her chance. Marciano was one of 86 vendors who filled the SUB Ballroom on Wednesday selling handmade crafts, such as jewelry and soap.

Letter: Our leaders took an oath, have yet to live up to it

Editor, Ben Mills' use of 2-year-old Defense Department talking points in his letter in Monday's Daily Lobo still doesn't excuse the lies the United States government and its corporate media are still telling us about "the New Iraq." Iraq is a theocracy, not a democracy.

Re: Mass media fails public

The recent article by Colin Donoghue places accusations of censorship on the right which are not entirely accurate. Anyone that believes the left has no voice need only look at this very paper to realize that this is false. And if one is to consider 'neo-cons' to be leftists, as I do, then it becomes ...
