LETTER: People who eat meat deprive others of food

Editor, If we treat animals like animals, can we treat hypocrites like hypocrites? After reading Eric Howerton's column, I sort of picture him as a savage, tearing meat from a bone with his teeth, with blood running down his chin, dressed in furs, and petting his dog now and again.

Tennis team on its way home

After a lengthy trip away from home, the 63rd-ranked UNM men's tennis team returns to the Lobo Tennis Club this weekend to face 58th-ranked Texas Tech University and Illinois State University. The last time the Lobos were home, they were undefeated on the season while mercilessly pounding the University of Northern Arizona and San Francisco University, posting a perfect 2-0 record.

Ice Cube at heart of gangsta rap world

"Barbershop" presented a kinder, portlier version of Ice Cube than I remembered from his N.W.A. years, but hey, we all have to grow up sometime. But for those of us who need intelligent machismo and swaggering bravado from Ice Cube, Capitol Records is re-releasing the first four Cube albums under the banner, The Albums That Shook a Nation.

V-Day history not about love

Break out the candy conversation hearts with psychotic, goopy sayings -- that day of love, flowers and machine guns is upon us. That's right, Valentine's Day is rearing its sickly little head. Break out a cigarette and let the activities commence. Sadly, these activities put most of us in one of two categories: in love or not in love.

LETTER: Wealthy Americans' fear based on greed

Editor, I've been reading and hearing a lot lately about fear. Americans, we are told, should be afraid of another terrorist attack. Britons, the media say, should be afraid of a similar attack. The Koreans are afraid of an American pre-emptive strike. The Israelis are afraid of a film about the Jenin refugee camp and have banned it.

Voice behind Cat Power an 'anti-star'

She took the name of her group from a baseball cap advertising a tractor company. "She" is Chan (pronounced Shawn) Marshall, the Atlanta-born, New York-based singer/songwriter who, with the help of a few sidemen friends, makes up the "group" Cat Power.

Course survey system crucial

As the spring semester begins to fade and summer weather blooms, professors will finally quiet down and allow the students an opportunity to voice their opinions. At the end of every semester, students are asked to complete Instruction and Course Evaluation System forms designed to give instructors and professors feedback on their teaching methods and course material from the people who know it best.

COLUMN: Treat animals like animals

I eat meat. I love stripping meat from rib bones with my bare hands as I pay homage to my australopithecine ancestors by boycotting cutlery. I love sushi, stuffing myself full of salmon sashimi and unagi until I look like a fully inflated blowfish. And I occasionally love a rubbery seven-cow composite frankfurter stuffed in a pasty white bun and slathered with gelatinous canned chili.

How to lose that guy

Why would you want to lose a guy in 10 days? Only if he's stalking you, or really butt ugly. There just so happens to be an instructional book with specific methods on how to lose a guy. The movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson is based on this book, but thank the screenwriters for coming up a better plot.
