High-flying freshman making an impact

It's a bird, it's a plane, no wait -- it's Mark Walters. The high-flying redshirt freshman has raised eyebrows with his play so far this year. On Friday night, the Lobo sensation continued to display his strong skills. He scored a career-high 19 points, including a run of nine straight points in the first half that helped the Lobos secure a comfortable lead as they cruised to a 91-66 win over the Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Construction to begin over winter break

During winter break, several construction projects will begin around campus that will cause road closures and changes in pedestrian routes. According to the UNM Web site, Way To Go at www.unm.edu/waytogo/bigi.html, one of the most visible of these projects will be the construction of a utility tunnel trench extension in front of Popejoy Hall that will impact drivers and pedestrians using Redondo Drive.

University alumnus to take on ASU law school

Staff Report A prestigious UNM almunus has been selected to help lead the way for Arizona State University's law school to become a premier institution in American Indian law education. Kevin Gover, 47, who graduated cum laude from the UNM School of Law in 1981, will teach courses at the ASU College of Law's Indian Legal Program.

Superstar cast give "Igby Down Under" Oscar edge

"Igby Goes Down," now playing at Madstone Theaters, is one of the best movies to come out this year bar none. With a stellar cast, phenomenal writing, a score that exceeds all standards of what can be done with music in film and one of the strongest performances this year, "Igby Goes Down" should be a strong contender for all categories of the Academy Awards.

Youth in Transition, a day shelter for homeless youth, has never been a stranger to hardship, and when the building was burned down on Thanksgiving, it only got worse. Youth in Transition lost all of its supplies, including food and winter clothes, and is presently in a state of emergency.

International honor society aims to be chartered again

The UNM Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, Rho Delta will continue an initiative toward becoming a chartered organization by organizing a Holiday Gala at University House today. Kappa Delta Pi is the international honor society in education and the gala will be the first formal event that the Rho Delta chapter has had in five years, said Sue Ann Lieber, chapter president.

Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Mark Walters and Jordan Adams are this week's New Mexico Daily Lobo Athletes of the Week. Walters recorded his first double-double against Northeastern University in a 90-88 victory. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds. On Friday, he had a career-high 19 points in a win over Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

LETTER: Crosswalks need monitoring

Editor, I appreciate your recent article and attention to the issue of pedestrian safety. I believe this is an important issue, both on main and north campus. As a staff member and student, I spend quite a bit of time walking on campus. I would like to point out two other crosswalks that I feel are dangerous for those of us on north campus.

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Lobos to play UCLA in Las Vegas Bowl

Sunday, the University of California at Los Angeles accepted a bid to play the UNM football team in the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl Dec. 25. The addition of the Bruins, out of the Pacific-10 Conference, gives the bowl game a friendly feel, said UNM Athletic Director Rudy Davalos.

by Craig A. Butler Daily Lobo Columnist Last week, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled on the legitimacy of California's semiautomatic assault weapons ban. It upheld the ban, which was not a surprise. But Judge Stephen Reinhardt, well known to be one of the nation's most proactive liberal judges, also produced for the case a 70-page dissertation on the Second Amendment.

Visitor teaches art of Karatsu pottery

With a recent visit from guest artist Yoshihirio Mizokami, the UNM Art Education Program continued its long-standing tradition in teaching traditional and contemporary methods of creating hand-made functional pottery. Mizokami, who is a stoneware potter working in the tradition of Karatsu, worked with students on a daily basis in the pottery studio during his three months at UNM, said Kathryne Cyman, art education instructor.
