LETTER: Daily Lobo prints one-sided opinions

Editor, Thank you Scott Darnell, Louis Metzger and Wayne Schlingman. Criticism like yours of the Daily Lobo's editorial decisions is long overdue. As an instructor here at UNM for the past two years, I too have noticed a consistent pattern of thought in the pages of the editorial section.

LETTER: English 101 students also display generosity

Editor, All too seldom does one hear instructors "bragging on" their students. As a postscript to Angela Heisel's article, "UNM displays holiday generosity," in Monday's Daily Lobo, I would like to air how my English 101 students are finding "the satisfaction of knowing several readings and some class discussion of the "homelessness problem," one of my students declared her case of writer's block when the time came for drafting the semester's third essay.

Tracking student parents difficult

by Stuart Overbey Daily Lobo While organizations offer support for student parents, UNM has no method for counting or tracking them, something which is concerning many in the University community. The waiting list for the UNM Child Care Center hints at the numbers.

COLUMN: Trust self for good deeds

by Rachel Richmond University Daily (Texas Tech U.) U-Wire My roommate Victoria told me this story about this incident at her place of employment. This little old lady left Vic's work and was approached in the parking lot by a toothless woman. The woman asked the little old lady for a lift and the little old lady agreed, thinking it would be a nice gesture.

LETTER: Loss of Vigil's food cart disappointing

Editor, It's sad to hear that an "overzealous" health inspector had the power to shut down the only decent food source on the UNM campus. Due to the closure of the SUB, there are limited places to find a decent meal on campus. As a hungry student, I often depended on the food that "Boss Man" had to offer.

COLUMN: Political campaigns no longer about viewpoint

by Sam Stein The Dartmouth (Dartmouth College) U-Wire It was 1994, and I was sitting in the second tier of my high school's auditorium. I remember it distinctly because the whole event was so comical. In front of me were the three candidates running for eighth grade class president, each candidate unique in their own regard.

LETTERS: Daily Lobo's policies biased, unprofessional

Editor, I couldn't agree more with the letter from Scott Darnell, Louis Metzger IV and Wayne Schlingman. If nothing else, you have proved their point by adding a headline that completely misses the point! It's not just that the published columns present only one point of view - it's that your editorial practices and policies as a whole are biased and unprofessional.

J5 shows dedication to hip-hop

Say real hip-hop. Say it and think of Chali 2na shaking hands and signing autographs with concert-goers who stood in line for hours on a cold night. Say it and think of B-girls and B-boys breaking on the floor of the Sunshine Theater while a diverse crowd anticipated the Jurassic 5's entrance.

'Secretary' a dark spin on romance

Somewhere inside even the most cynical of us is the hope that all people have someone out there for them - "Secretary" does a valiant job of upholding that dream. The movie, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal as Lee Holloway and James Spader as Mr. E. Edward Grey, takes a deliciously dark spin on what romance and love can be.

Few students attend Fee Review Board's funding discussion

The Student Fee Review Board's town hall meeting, billed as an open forum for students to voice concerns about departmental fund allocation, turned out to be a missed opportunity for UNM students. Two students attended the Monday night meeting in Dane Smith Hall, which broke down the fee, included in tuition, paid by each UNM student.

New parking garage delayed

Construction of two components of the new Cornell Parking Garage have been delayed because of a difference in the project's original budget estimate and a new estimate conducted after the project was put out to bid. Roger Lujan, UNM facility planning director, told the Commission on Higher Education Thursday that the two components, a new visitor center and a concession stand canopy, will be finished once new funding becomes available after the garage is complete some time near September of 2003.

UNM submits new funding plan

Funding for UNM could increase in 2004 after a state education committee voted 10-1 Friday to change the model used by legislators to determine funding for New Mexico universities and colleges. The new funding model now only needs approval in the state legislature's next session to become a reality.

COLUMN: Religion gets kicked in the butt

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo columnist In trying to think of a title for a short story I'm working on, I did an Internet search for the word "messiah." This produced some interesting results. In addition to the Catholic Encyclopedia entry - the most useful of my results - and sites for a number of churches, the search came up with two sites that seemed a bit, well, out of place.
