Men's Soccer: Lobos' season ends with second round loss to Washington in NCAA Tourney

The UNM men’s soccer team gave up four goals in a game for the first time all season in a losing effort to the Washington Huskies, ending their season two rounds into the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. The Lobos (12-7-3) took a 4-1 loss to the Huskies (14-6-0), snapping an eight match undefeated streak. Sunday's result was not how head coach Jeremy Fishbein wanted to end the season, but he said the loss wouldn’t take away from all the positives he saw during the entire season.

Students show off work at Cherry Reel Film Festival

After they grabbed their popcorn and drinks, students settled into their seats at the UNM Theater in the SUB for the Cherry Reel Film Festival. Just a few years ago, the event — celebrating the works of UNM film students while awarding the best in show — would have taken less than an hour. But thanks to a record amount of submissions to this year’s event — 53 total — students were able to see a more diverse slate of efforts created by their peers. The films themselves were fantastic. The emotional quality was top-notch, especially when paired with perfectly selected music. There was a wide range of films, with some providing a blend of drama and comedy.

Should the U.S. do away with the Electoral College?

The popular vote totals from this month’s election puts Hillary Clinton ahead of President-elect Donald Trump by nearly 1.8 million votes, according to the most recent estimates by the Cook Political Report. Trump dominated the Nov. 8 election with nearly a 60-electoral vote margin, according to estimates, while not all states have given official results. In the election aftermath there has been an uptick in conversations about the Electoral College, with some feeling the system is outdated.

Women's Basketball: Lobos doomed by poor shooting in loss to Texas Tech

Lobo women's basketball left its shooting touch in Albuquerque, as the team shot a dismal percentage from the field en route to a 69-58 loss at Texas Tech. New Mexico (2-1) has shown it likes to shoot the three, but on Sunday the deep ball just wasn’t there. The Lobos shot just 8-for-37 from beyond the arc, but managed to keep the score close for most of the game. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor throughout. Texas Tech (2-1) made just under 35 percent of its shots (29-of-83), but the Lobos were even less efficient, (23-of-80) connecting on just 29 percent of theirs.

Album Review: A Tribe Called Quest returns with final record

After 18 years, a war and a recession, at long last hip-hop pioneers A Tribe Called Quest have given us one last, powerful farewell. In a political climate that couldn’t have been more suited for goodbyes, this album hits all the checkmarks music connoisseurs didn’t know they wanted from one last ATCQ record. “We Got it From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service” is a charged, righteous and smooth double-album featuring the whole Quest Tribe, in addition to a few friends they made along the way. Elton John, Anderson .Paak, Andre 3000 and Jack White join Q-tip, Phife Dwag, Jarobi and Shaheed to forge one of the best hip-hop albums this year.

KIVA Club's long activist history

What began in 1952 as a social club for Native American students at UNM, quickly evolved into one of the most politically active groups in New Mexico by the time the Civil Rights Movement was at its peak in the '60s. Kiva Club, a student organization meant to encourage community involvement in Native American issues, is steeped in a history of consistent activism. To many students, Kiva Club might best be known today for its ongoing campaign to abolish the University’s official seal — which it has called offensive — but this effort is just the latest in a series of social movements spawned by the group’s members.

The effectiveness of political protests

When it comes to making changes in the U.S., most of the time it takes more than one person. Many drastic shifts in the past have resulted from individuals coming together to protest and convince others to help make desirable changes. “One of the purposes of a protest is that it is a public statement,” said Chris Banks, a local activist who helps organize major protests. “When someone goes to a protest, they’re overcoming disempowerment, and for the first time recognizing the power of the people.”

Letter: Universities should open their doors to more conservatives

The hate and intolerance directed at Trump during Wednesday's "walk out" reminded me of a relatively old (1991) quote from a well-known liberal attorney, author and professor named Alan Dershowicz, who back then was so disturbed by the lack of respect for conservatives in certain liberal circles he’s on record as saying: “Political correctness is the most serious issue on college campuses. We are tolerating, and teaching, intolerance and hypocrisy” (James Warren, “Drawing Laughs,” Chicago Tribune, April 14, 1991, section 5, p. 2). Things didn’t change much from 1991 by 2005. Indeed, the intolerance of the ever-so-trendy “politically correct” mob just seemed to have gotten worse (power may have gone to their heads). That motivated a libertarian syndicated columnist named Nat Hentoff to pen a piece titled "College no place for closed minds" (Chicago Sun-Times, Sept. 15, 2005, p. 45).

Football: Colorado State outhustles UNM for big win

For a second straight season, Colorado State spoiled New Mexico’s division title aspirations, beating the Lobos to win its final game ever at Hughes Stadium, 49-31, to earn bowl game eligibility. New Mexico head coach Bob Davie said there was a lot of energy in the stadium and the student section was “on fire” in helping to cheer the Rams to victory. The Rams dominated play on both sides of the ball, consistently putting their playmakers in position to make an impact — and they wasted no time getting things started.

UNM conservatives have mixed emotions on election

With the results of the election, Republicans now have dominance in the House, Senate and the Oval Office. The zeitgeist across the nation and here on campus has been a potpourri of varied reactions and emotions. In what may come as a surprise to some, Republican students at UNM are also experiencing ambivalent feelings.

Column: Don't get complacent after tough election

I woke up on Nov. 9 not wanting to do anything. Anything at all, up to and including: go to class, eat breakfast or even put on pants. The wind was taken out of my already fluttering sails. It was something I didn’t see coming. I joked about it. I half-heartedly said “but, what if?” I didn’t fully absorb the reality until the following Sunday, when I saw a “60 Minutes” preview that read “45th President” with Donald J. Trump’s face beside it. There is a tsunami of feelings that came with that reality. I felt let down, confused, scared, worried, frantic, desperate and apathetic. One thing I wasn’t, not in the least, was hopeful.

Cross Country: Women finish 7th at NCAAs

New Mexico women’s cross country was unable to defend its crown, but still finished in seventh place to secure a ninth straight Top 10 finish at NCAA Nationals on Saturday. The No. 6-ranked Lobos tailed 310 points to place seventh and registered a season-best spread of just 57.2 seconds, only three points behind No. 10 San Francisco. “From a team standpoint, if you look at the 2-kilometer and 4-kilometer splits, we ran incredibly as a team,” New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said in a release.

Letter: The Electoral College needs to be reformed, not abolished

The framers of the U.S. Constitution created the Electoral College as a result of a compromise for the presidential election process. During the debate, some delegates felt that a direct popular election would lead to the election of each state’s favorite son and none would emerge with sufficient popular majority to govern the country.  Other delegates felt that giving Congress the power to select the president would deny the people their right to choose. After all, the people voted for their representatives to the federal legislature. The compromise was to set up an Electoral College system that allowed voters to vote for electors, who would then cast their votes for candidates, a system described in Article II, section 1 of the Constitution.

Nevada head coach Lee Nelson said the Lobos had the capability of taking down the Wolf Pack, especially if the team lacked focus or became complacent.

Men's Basketball: Lobos clamp down on defense in second half to beat NMSU

The Lobos ratcheted up the defensive intensity and walked away from their first Rio Grande Rivalry game of the season with a 72-59 victory. “I’ll start off by saying I thought New Mexico State was a really good team,” said UNM head coach Craig Neal. “I thought they played hard. They did a really nice job in the first half. Caught us a little bit off balance.” The first half was tight throughout, as both teams played pretty even. The Lobos (3-0) led for most of this period but the biggest lead was only of six points, which happened three times.
