Shock, surprise, awe. A combination of those feelings, to varying degrees, was felt by most Americans last Tuesday, when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won Florida, then Pennsylvania, then Wisconsin. And then, officially, the Oval Office. Ever since, many Americans have been left in a bit of a daze over the surprising outcome. It has also made some feel apprehensive about the potential repercussions of a new cultural mindset that many allege to be xenophobic, one that has manifested itself.

Football: Lobos win fifth consecutive game after coming back on the road

New Mexico football grinded out its fifth straight win in Logan, Utah on Saturday night, in a game featuring an action-packed fourth quarter that saw some big decisions lead to even bigger consequences. The last three series probably provided enough excitement to last head coach Bob Davie a lifetime. He praised his kicker for making a big field goal to lift the team to what he called a terrific win.

Concert Review: Despite technical issues, Hopsin delivers strong performance

On Friday, Albuquerque’s Sunshine Theater welcome rapper Hopsin to perform for a crowd of dedicated fans and other Hip Hop fanatics. The line to get in went around the block and had people from all walks of life coming to see the show. Along with Hopsin, there were two other acts that would take the stage that night — the young rapper Token and Joyner Lucas. The theater became packed even before Token took the stage; most in the audience came for Hopsin, but got a pleasant surprise with Token’s performance.

Men's Basketball: Lobos win 14th straight regular season opener on Heroes Night

Head coach Craig Neal wore the cherry blazer for Friday night’s match against Idaho State. It wasn’t easy, but he is now 4-0 in season openers at UNM, and New Mexico has now won its last 14 such games. The Lobos took an 81-70 victory over the Bengals in front of 11,293 fans, during what Neal described as one of the most challenging season openers he’s experienced as a head coach.

Cross Country: Women secure ninth straight NCAA Championship bid at Regionals

The New Mexico cross country women continued their string of solid performances at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday in Logan, Utah, finishing second to qualify for their ninth straight nationals appearance. The men’s team posted a respectable ninth place among 17 teams, but the ranking isn’t enough to advance the squad to an NCAA Championship appearance. Both the men and women faced a fiercely competitive field in the Mountain Regionals.

Men's Soccer: Lobos have chance to win C-USA Tourney on Sunday

The New Mexico men’s soccer team is only one win away from hoisting its first Conference USA Championship trophy. But the next 90-plus minutes won’t be easy. On Sunday, the Lobos will have to take on the FIU Panthers, last year’s winners who are looking to post back-to-back titles. The Panthers (10-5-2, 5-2-1 C-USA) took a 2-0 win over Old Dominion (6-9-2, 2-5-1) in Friday’s semifinals. Both goals were netted in the second half by junior defender Paul Marie.

Women's Basketball: Lobos hope to use size advantage against Fairleigh Dickinson in season opener

The Lobo women’s basketball team will be taking on out-of-conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson this Saturday in its season home opener at WisePies Arena at 2 p.m. Head coach Mike Bradbury expects the Lobos to play well in the team’s home opener, but also expects a challenge. “They bring back three starters and they play a completely different style,” Bradbury said. “It'll be a test and we're looking forward to it."

Students organize in wake of Election Day outcome

On Thursday night a group of students and community members gathered in a room in the SUB to discuss the election of Donald Trump as president — and the mood was anything but happy. Vote Socialism 2016, a student group and offshoot of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, organized the event, calling it “Not My President.” The room was small but crowded, and there were palpable feelings of despair, shock and resolution in the air as people came to grips with the outcome of Election Night. A Republican House, Senate, and Donald Trump as president — a crushing defeat for liberals and progressives in America.

“If you were in that stadium at 1:10 a.m. on 11/5/16, my email is rdavie@unm.edu. You send me an email, send me your home address, give me a little story as to why you thought it was important that you stayed — and I will definitely commemorate the occasion.” Head coach Bob Davie is normally not one to dwell on the past, and is typically steadfast in his stance that it isn’t his place to coach fans or tell them what to do. But he took the time to reflect and deliver the above statement to start Tuesday’s press conference to show his appreciation for the Lobo fans that stayed throughout the entirety of Saturday’s affair, when the Lobos eventually beat Nevada after a lengthy rain delay to become bowl-eligible once again.

Men's Basketball: Lobos look to make it 14 straight wins in season openers on Friday night

The weather is finally cooling down in Albuquerque but WisePies Arena is about to heat up. The Lobo men’s basketball team officially tips off the season by hosting the Idaho State Bengals at 8:15 p.m. in Friday night’s season opener. New Mexico has built up some confidence, as well as momentum, after winning both of their exhibition matches last week, with 113-57 and 88-66 scores against in-state competition.

UNM, CIA officially announce partnership

Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan announced on a visit to to UNM on Thursday that the University is to be the first participant in the CIA’s new signature school program, while also commenting on the security challenges that face the U.S. Brennan, who was introduced by UNM President Bob Frank, has been a part of the CIA for three years, and said UNM could have an impact in the CIA’s mission, saying that, from what he has seen, “the spirit of multidisciplinary learning and innovation is alive” at the University.

Album Review: 'Eternally Even' a psychedelic trip into tranquility

“Sun’s out, not a thought about rain. No trace of tears or pain, I hope you’re having a wonderful life,” croons Jim James on the eponymous track of his second solo album, “Eternally Even.” The song, much like the whole record, is a breezy, psychedelic serenade embellished with bright keys, savory bass lines and impetuous lyrics that wrap listeners up in the grooviest cyclone of 2016. James’ is most widely known as the frontman of the rock group My Morning Jacket. An alternative take on alternative music, My Morning Jacket grew upon a passionate fan base that revered the band’s versatile take on genre, and their ability to fluently change styles at the drop of a hat.

Column: A personal account of the anti-Trump protest

I arrived on Central Ave. and First Street around 7 p.m., to a moderate crowd gathered on the street corner. They were protesting the election results and renouncing the new president elect as their leader. Not 24 hours before, our nation received a shock comparable to the Kent State massacre — The Donald was elected our new president. I remember where I was that night. I was having a drink at the campus bar watching the votes come in from each of our nation’s states, and at this point I was nervous that Clinton wouldn’t emerge victorious from this vicious campaign that pitted the American people against each other.

ASUNM: The University seal should be changed

The Associated Students of UNM Senate on Wednesday passed an emergency resolution supporting the UNM KIVA Club’s campaign to change the University’s official seal, which the group has said contains offensive imagery. The legislation passed with a 15-5-0 vote, representing the latest bit of momentum gathered by a campaign — of which the Red Nation is also involved — that has been in motion since the spring semester. UNM Regents will deliberate over the matter on Tuesday.

ASUNM senator placed on probation

The Associated Students of UNM recently placed Sen. Michael Landgraf on probation after he acquired three demerits for not attending his designated office hours and an ASUNM Senate meeting. ASUNM President Pro Tempore Sarah Moore said a senator will receive a demerit when they do not act in accordance or fail to fulfill their duties as outlined by the Senator Accountability Code of the ASUNM Law Book.

Where to vote for ASUNM Senators on Election Day

With nearly two years of U.S. presidential election coverage over and done with as of Tuesday night, UNM students can now turn their attention to casting ballots for government leaders much closer to home. Senatorial elections for the Associated Students of UNM are on Wednesday, the undergraduate student governing body is looking for students to give input on who should represent them. “Our Elections Commission has been working diligently to make sure this is a fair and efficient election for students who wish to make their voice heard,” said Gabe Gallegos, ASUNM communications director.

Men's Basketball: MW Preseason Player of the Year back in time for regular season opener

Elijah Brown is ready to step back on the court for the first time in 2016-17, just in time for the season opener Friday night against Idaho State at WisePies Arena. Brown did not play during last week’s exhibition matches, as he was resting a hamstring injury. Although the injury happened last season, hamstrings can take more time to recover and have have a lingering effect. But Brown appears to be 100 percent now, and the junior guard said he didn’t take it easy on the workouts during the offseason.

The spectrum of emotions incited by the presidential election has perhaps never before been seen. Universities are often at the center of such political energy, with students of different opinions, backgrounds and beliefs advocating for certain changes to be made for their futures. With fame comes power and impression. Many students across the nation have constructed legacies for themselves, pursuing careers in politics or entering politics using their previous career as a mechanism to do so. Some, however, never enter the brackish pool of politics and instead use their name to promote a candidate, idea, or even awareness of an issue.
