On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Bernalillo Community Museum hosted the Tricks and Treats Fall Adoption Fair. The event featured adoptable dogs and cats from three agencies: Sandoval County Animal Services, Rio Rancho Animal Resource Center, and Cross My Paws Animal Rescue. This marks the first year this event has been held. The museum hopes to make it a regular occurrence, according to Bernalillo County Museum employee Nikoma Henkels. “Events like this bring people together,” Henkels said. “They connect people who have resources with people who need resources. They connect pet adopters with adoptable pets.”

‘Cuddle a Canine’ returns to Zimmerman Library

Students may have noticed there were a few more furry faces on Smith Plaza last week. On Thursday, Oct. 24, Zimmerman Library’s “Cuddle a Canine” event returned for the fall semester, bringing therapy dogs from the Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers to help students at the University of New Mexico relieve stress. Held twice a year during the fall and spring semester midterms, “Cuddle a Canine” is Zimmerman Library’s way to help ease some of the tension around the UNM community that can build up at this point in the semester, according to Tomás González, one of the event coordinators.

Football: Lobos comeback sparks third straight victory

The University of New Mexico football team fought tooth and nail against the Utah State University Aggies on Saturday, Oct. 19. Despite a rough start for the Lobos, they were able to dig deep and defeat Utah State 50-45. The Lobos found themselves in a hole early on in the first quarter. Their first drive was disastrous. Quarterback Devon Dampier threw a terrible ball into coverage, which resulted in an interception. The Aggies capitalized on the early turnover, converting it into points as they wound up in the end zone.

Teresa Leger Fernández (D) to represent New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District, which encapsulates northern New Mexico and parts of eastern New Mexico. From the Shiprock area, Clahchischilliage was a New Mexico state representative from 2013-18. Here's where she stands on key issues. Education Clahchischilliage has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Eastern New Mexico University, according to her website. She is a former teacher and a member of the New Mexico Public Education Commission, where her term will expire in December 2026. She cosponsored the Equal Educational Access Scholarship Act in 2016, which was postponed indefinitely. If passed, the act would have helped with funding educational scholarships for low-income students to attend non-public schools.

REVIEW: ‘The Apprentice’: An excellent movie about awful people

Released on Oct. 11 and directed by Ali Abbasi, “The Apprentice” follows a younger Donald Trump — played by Sebastian Stan — through his earlier business ventures and his first marriage to Ivana Zelníčková — played by Maria Bakalova. Jeremy Strong also stars as Trump’s lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn. The film opens with archival footage of Richard Nixon’s “I’m not a crook” speech alongside a montage depicting New York City in the 1970s — mostly consisting of strip clubs and police brutality. It sets an immediate tone of the turmoil that would allow Trump’s rise to power.

For many students at the University of New Mexico, this year’s presidential election will be the first they can vote in. To combat the stress of first-time voting, the Daily Lobo has prepared a guide. When can I vote? Early voting began Oct. 8. Twenty-one early voting convenience centers offer expanded voting that began on Saturday, Oct. 19 and will be open until Nov. 2. These voting locations are located on the Bernalillo County County Clerk website.

On Aug. 18, former President Donald Trump posted a series of images to Truth Social, one of which was real. The rest were AI-generated images of Taylor Swift fans endorsing and supporting him. The post was captioned, “I accept!” This is not the first instance of AI being used to distort information regarding the election. Also on Aug. 18, Trump's official X account posted an AI-generated image of a Kamala Harris rally decorated with communist symbols and regalia. The post has over 81 million views.

The funds would aim to “plan, design, purchase, install and implement related infrastructure to stabilize and modernize public safety radio communications systems statewide,” according to House Bill 308.

Bond question two would provide respective departments $6 million for non-tribal public libraries, $1 million for tribal libraries, $6 million for academic libraries and $6 million for public school libraries, according to House Bill 308. Rep. Derrick Lente (D) sponsored the bill in the New Mexico House of Representatives.

Treatment for opioid use disorder reduces reincarceration, researchers say

In 2005, Bernalillo County implemented a program that allowed people to get treatment for opioid use disorder while incarcerated. Researchers at the University of Mexico have since found evidence that the treatment reduces someone’s likelihood of returning to jail. Robert Agnew’s general strain theory of crime and delinquency suggests that when people experience excessive stress, they seek ways to cope with it, according to the journal “Criminology.” If people lack appropriate resources, they may turn to deviant behaviors as coping mechanisms. Edwin Sutherland’s differential association theory suggests that people learn criminal behavior from their social groups.

UNM football players reflect on potential of Guardian caps

Amid increased scrutiny over player safety, particularly concerning concussions and long-term brain health, Lobo football players weighed the potential introduction of Guardian caps at the University of New Mexico. As the sport of football evolves, so does the equipment used to protect its athletes. One innovation gaining traction is the Guardian cap, a soft-shell helmet cover designed to reduce impact during practices and games. The NFL announced at the beginning of this season that Guardian caps can be used in games.
