Men's Basketball: UNM routs Air Force in season’s final home game

Chris Perez never saw much playing time for the New Mexico basketball team, primarily taking the court in the final moments of blowout victories. That changed Wednesday night. The senior walk-on guard earned his career start in his final night at The Pit alongside fellow seniors Kendall Williams and Cameron Bairstow, both regular starters.

Women's workshop aims for equity

The U.S. Congress has more female members than ever in the country’s history, but that’s not much to smile about.Out of its 535 elected officials, only 98 members of Congress are women. The Elect Her campaign is working hard to change that, Chonya Johnson, one of the campaign’s facilitators, said. Johnson, who worked for more than 10 years with Congress, said she is passionate about the relevance of political policy to everyone.

Nation briefs

A group of third graders were caught smoking marijuana at school, according to the Los Angeles Times. Another student discovered two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old smoking weed in a Sonora Elementary School bathroom on Feb. 27. The superintendent did not divulge how the students will be disciplined and probation officials are investigating who supplied the drug.

North Valley clinic would serve more patients

After acquiring land late last year, UNM Hospital officials continue to advance plans for the North Fourth Street Clinic. UNMH CEO Steve McKernan said the hospital successfully acquired the property in December, and that at the moment, the hospital is working on a master plan for the facility. UNMH aims to present the plan to the UNM Board of Regents in April or May, McKernan said.

Track and field: City councilor helped city acquire indoor track

Brad Winter recalls watching high-level track and field athletes when he and his father attended Albuquerque Jaycee indoor meets in the 1970s, spurring a life-long interest in the sport. His efforts have allowed the city to resume hosting top-notch track talent, including the upcoming NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships on March 14-15. As a 14-year city councilor for District 4, Winter helped Albuquerque purchase an indoor track in 2004.

Men's Basketball: Neal stresses focus on Senior Night

Emotions will be high for three New Mexico men’s basketball seniors playing their last home game Wednesday night, but head coach Craig Neal wants those feelings to be expressed after the game. Neal said he would rather have the desire for another Mountain West regular-season championship remain in effect during the 40 minutes of game action against Air Force.

Building baseball programs from the ground up is nothing new to Ray Birmingham. After all, he’s been doing it for most of his adult life. Birmingham has built four programs throughout the Land of Enchantment during his 27 year career: Mayfield High School, College of the Southwest, New Mexico Junior College and now UNM.

Letter: One man's trash is another man's gold's baleful avatar

I thought we were friends. Allies, at least. When I sent you a letter about the dangers of bronze wolf statues, you printed it. When I sent you a letter about the dangers of people wearing gang colors such as red and blue, you printed it. When I sent you a box of my hair and fingernail clippings and some poems I wrote, you didn’t immediately file a restraining order. Later you did, yes, but you waited a while, as if unsure of your own feelings, which I’m sure you were.

Online courses to reach, teach thousands

Associate Provost Greg Heileman teaches about 40 students per semester at UNM, but in about two weeks, he’ll be instructing thousands. Beginning on Mar. 17, Heileman will teach UNM’s first Massive Online Open Course.
