‘N-word’ a complex issue

Cinnamon Burton had just finished doing her laundry in the Laguna 2 dormitory last Friday. She had no idea that upon returning to her dorm, she would see that someone had scrawled a racial slur on a white board on one of her suite-mate’s doors.

Editor, Recently I have begun to notice the alarming proliferation of a number of life-sized, bronze statues of wolves, all around campus — near the Duck Pond, Zimmerman Library, and elsewhere — and I am alarmed at how I fear this might affect the safety of our school.

Men's Basketball: Lobos closing in on MWC

Based on Wednesday’s results, the Mountain West Conference men’s basketball regular-season title race looks like it will come down to two teams — San Diego State and New Mexico. The Aztecs, ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 this week, and the Lobos hold the top two spots, while every other conference team exited Wednesday’s action with at least three losses.

Football: Davie signs big D players

Once again, Bob Davie focused his recruiting efforts mainly on the defensive side of the ball — specifically on defensive linemen. The head coach of New Mexico football signed 26 players for the 2014 recruiting class, six of whom are defensive linemen.

Baseball: New roster may balance team

Head coach Ray Birmingham does not have many worries about this year’s New Mexico baseball team. One of them, however, is that UNM is lacking experience across the board with the loss of five positional players and six pitchers. Seven of those players were taken in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Women's Basketball: Wyoming edges out Lobo women

The New Mexico women’s basketball team lost 79-75 at Wyoming on Wednesday night. Two free throws by guard Sarah Halasz cut the Cowgirls’ lead to 65-62 with 3:29 left. Wyoming then went on an 8-2 run to put away the game and extended its Mountain West home winning streak to five games.

ArtStreet aims to dismiss homeless stigma

The room buzzes with energy, the tablecloths are splattered with acrylic rainbows, a pottery wheel spins actively in one corner and the sounds of laughter and guitar mingle with one another. The story we hear about the homeless is one of survival; the story ArtStreet tells is one of life.

Men's Basketball: Lobos topple Wyoming in overtime, again

One overtime game between New Mexico and Wyoming weren’t enough. They needed a second in their return game Wednesday night at The Pit. The Lobos finished the extra session with a 7-3 rally, scoring completely off free throws over that stretch, to outlast Wyoming 66-61 for the second time this season.

Scholarship up for debate

A coalition of students from different colleges across the state has decided to offer its support to a long-term solution for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship’s solvency issue. Isaac Romero, president of the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico and a member of the work group, said he supports Senate Bill 150 because it would provide a long-term solution to the shortage in funds for the scholarship.

Parent Association weighs with survey

About two-thirds of UNM students’ parents advocate raising the Legislative Lottery Scholarship’s GPA requirement to ensure its solvency. According to a survey conducted last June by the University’s Parent Association, 64 percent of the 468 respondents are in favor of increasing the scholarship’s minimum GPA requirement from a 2.5.

UNM Crime Briefs

On January 28, officers arrived at UNMH on a report of a woman who said she was in fear of being followed. According to the report, Claudia Molina said she was at a gym when her boyfriend called her and asked her where she was, intending to visit her.
