Turning losses into experience

The UNM women’s soccer team has the chance to put an inconsistent season behind it when it faces UNLV on Saturday. The Lobos took a nose dive midway through the season after they lost three games in a row, but they bounced back with a four game unbeaten streak, including three wins and a tie to San Diego State University (SDSU) last week.

Young squad must step it up

The UNM volleyball team has 11 games left in its regular season, and there’s still one starting position to fill. This season, the Lobos have been shuffling through players trying to find the perfect complement to middle blocker Ashley Rhoades in the attack. “We’re really struggling in the outside hitting position in terms of people stepping up and being consistent,” head coach Jeff Nelson said.

Housing plans may alter UNM’s focus

Lobo Development officials told ASUNM they hope to drastically increase UNM’s on-campus housing. Lobo Development Board members Eliseo “Cheo” Torres and Walter Miller spoke to the senators about why they think on-campus housing benefits UNM students during a Sept. 28 ASUNM meeting. “We have to increase on-campus student housing because studies indicate that students do better if they work and live on campus,” Torres said.

Buying sex not always dirty, wrong

Prostitution and New Mexico have shared some headline space recently. The most notable cases include the 2009 West Mesa murders, ex-UNM President F. Chris Garcia’s arrest in July on suspicions of involvement with the online prostitution ring Southwest Companions, and Judge Albert Murdoch’s arrest, also in July, on suspicion of raping a prostitute and intimidating a witness.

UNM needs new CAPS, not new rec center

Editor, CAPS, in Zimmerman Library, is a critical resource at UNM. Unfortunately, because of the recent rapid increase in student population and chronic under-funding, CAPS is having difficulty handling large numbers of students in the very small area which is located at Zimmerman Library.

Internet hackers effect real-life change

The Internet, despite the vague conception that events on it do not affect real life, has taken on an influence in political life which is unmistakable, and defies continued attempts to relegate interactions on social media to triviality. The events now called “Arab Spring” — the protests in Egypt, Libya and the Middle East — have proven that social media has started to play a central role in political protest, organization and motivation.
