Veterans looking to break into the job market can soon find employment in information technology. TRiVet, a non-profit veteran-run computer service, will have an informational meeting next Friday at the SUB.

Student groups honor day of service

UNM College Democrats are sponsoring a clothing and canned food drive on Friday to help New Mexico veterans. Melissa Trent, College Democrats vice president, said the group will put out three bins — one at Smith Plaza, one behind Hokona Hall, and one in the bottom floor of the SUB — as part of the National Day of Service on Sept.

School of Law rated no. 1 for Hispanics

The UNM School of Law has been ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row in a top 10 list by Hispanic Business Magazine. In September’s issue, the magazine ranked the top 10 schools in the nation for Hispanic students.

History misremembered in recent article on GPSA

Editor, In the article about the GPSA on Tuesday, the Daily Lobo reported, “As a result of protests and chaos … a number of people were injured and the New Mexico National Guard was called in, he said.” This implies that the events occurred in the following order: protests and chaos, then people were injured, then the National Guard was called in.

Hall circulating smoke from assigned area

Earth and Planetary Science professors say Northrop Hall is sucking in secondhand smoke from a designated area in front of the building. EPS Department Chairman John Geissman said the building sometimes has negative air pressure, which draws outside air — and smoke — into the Hall.




	David Polka will exhibit his art at the Cirq Gallery showing through Oct. 2. Polka uses wood and paper medium in his show titled “In Abandon.”

Artist's Avenue

David Polka knows a career in art isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. Polka comes from a family of artists and got a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art. He’s had shows for the pieces he creates on multiple mediums including wood and paper. Polka said New Mexican art has influenced him without his realizing it, and he will incorporate that style into his future work.

Pizza 9 offers prizes for pigging out

Pizza 9 is challenging anyone with a big enough stomach to break the world record for eating the most pizza slices in 10 minutes.The record, set by Joey Chestnut in 2008, is 45 slices of Chicago-style cheese pizza.Pizza 9’s Tom Epley said the contest is a great way to have fun while consuming ludicrous amounts of pizza.

With more than 132 million unique visitors in 2008, Facebook is considered to be the world’s leading social networking site (during the same year, MySpace had a mere 117 million unique visitors). And, in terms of Internet traffic, some rank Facebook as the planet’s fourth busiest Web site.

Allen Weh will announce his candidacy for governor of New Mexico at noon today in the SUB Atrium. In a Sept. 4 interview, Weh said the main issues he wants to tackle as governor are government corruption, education and New Mexico’s budget.

Bookstore faces online competition

Students are choosing to purchase their textbooks from Internet providers instead of on-campus bookstores, said Jeff Sherwood, CEO of a textbook comparison Web site. Sherwood’s Bigwords.com has seen an increase of 25 to 50 percent in visitors and revenue each year since 2001, he said.
