Lobos look forward to NCAA action

No theatrics, no anxiety - the UNM men's tennis team already knew it would be in the NCAA Championships field. After winning the Mountain West Conference on Saturday, the Lobos won't forget to pack the sunscreen, because they are headed to sunny Los Angeles to take on Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 9.

Zero to 25 mph in about nine seconds. That's what you get taking a spin in a Zenn electric car, as I did Monday. Paul Watson, biology research professor and owner of Zenn Electric Cars in Albuquerque, allowed the Daily Lobo to test drive one of the sleek, environmentally friendly vehicles.

Soldiers to expound on Israel

Two members of the Israeli Defense Forces will share their stories on campus today in honor of Israeli Independence Day. The soldiers will talk about their experience in the armed forces and Israel's history as a country at 2 p.m. in the SUB Sandia Room. Major Ashrat Bachar's speech will center on the progress women have made in the armed forces since the country declared independence in 1948.

Study: Female professors earn less than males

Today is national Equal Pay Day, and female professors at UNM are still paid less than their male counterparts. According to a University-wide study accepted for publication on Sunday, female professors at UNM earn 3 percent less than male professors, even after controlling productivity variables such as maternity leave, education and discipline.

Monica Demarco took the music she wrote over the past five years and turned it into a multimedia extravaganza for her senior recital - the cherry atop her music composition and theory degree sundae. Two of those pieces, "Fray" and "Hijas de la Chingada," won the UNM Composers' Symposium this year and last.

Symposium to highlight ethics in research

Today's Research Ethics Symposium will highlight the most trying questions plaguing labs around the world. "Fostering Integrity in Research" is being held today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Centennial Engineering Center. William Gannon, who works in the Office of the Vice President for Research and coordinated the symposium, said President David Schmidly has increased UNM's focus on research integrity during his time at UNM.

Group gets food to needy families

PB&J Family Services collaborated with the Albuquerque business community Monday to provide Crock-pots full of food to 100 hungry families. PB&J Family Services is a local organization that provides case management, counseling, parenting classes and health care to needy families.

Editor, Using students to assist the UNM Police Department in keeping track of the school is an excellent idea, and the idea raises another idea in my mind - one that may inflame the sentiments of many students on campus. Campus shootings invariably happen in areas that are referred to as gun-free zones.
