Construction of UNM's Rio Rancho campus began more than a week ago, and officials say work will proceed despite the recent revelation that state law requires off-campus facilities to be authorized by the Legislature. The University is backing House Bill 354, which asks the Legislature to authorize construction of the campus, an expansion of the existing West Side campus.

Senior Eliana Enriquez is majoring in art studio with a concentration in sculpture. This semester, she's taking intermediate sculpture and painting, but she doesn't much like painting because she doesn't "view the world in that type of space," she said. Students and administrators agree that UNM's academic advisement system is flawed, but few students showed up to Tuesday's advisement forum in the SUB. Sophomore Alison Gaik, one of about 35 students at the forum, said she wished more students were willing to express their opinions.

Editor, I work at UNM West in Rio Rancho. Apparently, UNM West was presented as an item of discussion and controversy during the faculty meeting last week. The citizens of Rio Rancho passed a tax bill to allocate money for the building of a campus in Rio Rancho.
ASUNM voted not to change its elections policy, shooting down a resolution that would have allowed candidates to spend more on their campaigning and imposed stricter punishments for those who violated the code. Sen. Christopher George proposed a bill on the topic at a Senate meeting Feb.

Editor, In his piece plugging the U.S. Public Service Academy on Feb. 27, Zac Westbrook sounds like a military recruiter trying hard not to sound like one. If the graduates are going to be helping out at Katrina-like disasters, why is it modeled after academies that are military? His calling the latter "illustrious" is what gives him away, like when a posse of trained killers is called an elite corps.

UNM Foundation officials say the fundraising group has outperformed the national average, in spite of the economic recession, by diversifying the investment of donated funds. The Foundation brought in a 0.7 percent return last fiscal year on an estimated $325 million in endowment funds, Foundation President John Stropp said.
