GPSA seeks child care subsidies for graduate students

Graduate and professional students are working to persuade legislators to change a state code that prevents them from getting subsidies for child care. Lissa Knudsen, GPSA council chairwoman, said the Children, Youth and Families Department code offers subsidies only to undergraduate student parents.

UNM overcomes CSU's physical play, strategy

Want to gain confidence back after a two-game road skid? How about a visit from eighth-place Colorado State? On Saturday, the UNM women's basketball team handed the Rams their 11th Mountain West Conference loss, 78-56. "Of course, we needed this one, obviously," head coach Don Flanagan said.

Freedom-hating professors show little regard for the law

Editor, I was disgusted with professors Sharon Warner and Feroza Jussawalla for using the microphone at Wednesday's faculty meeting to further infect the public mind with their freedom-hating views. This tyrannous pair brought up last year's completely unrelated Creative Writing fiasco, once again demonstrating their contempt for the rule of law and individual rights.

Lobos' feverish pitching foils Bears

Fourth-inning follies almost foiled the UNM baseball team's four-game sweep of Northern Colorado. But behind Cole White's feverish 90-mph pitching, the Lobos held on to win 10-8. White entered in the top of the sixth. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, faced nine batters and finished with five strikeouts.

After tumultuous start, a winning mentality

It takes nine players to fill the positions of a softball field. The UNM softball team started the school year with five. A team typically has three or four full-time pitchers; the Lobos had none. A Division-I program carries anywhere from 17 to 20 players on its roster; UNM entered the 2009 season with 13.

Corrections

Contrary to what was printed Thursday, Phil May, not John Taylor, was pictured addressing faculty members about one of the ballot items presented at Wednesday's meeting at Popejoy Hall. ---- The quote on page one of Thursday's issue, "If there is disrespect toward faculty, they're not going to respect you," should have been attributed to student Alison Carrillo and not Magdalena Avila.

Column: Bud Selig needs to learn from his mistakes

Bud Selig claims he had no knowledge about how prevalent steroids were/are in baseball. "I don't want to hear, 'The commissioner turned a blind eye to this,' or 'He didn't care about it,'" Selig told Newsday's Wallace Matthews in a telephone interview. "That annoys the you-know-what out of me.

Obama has already brought change beyond expectations

Editor, This is in response to the letter written on Feb. 4 by Andres Saenz concerning President Obama's "failure to keep promises." First of all, Obama has been in office for about two months. Give him a break. He is only human. As far as the inauguration, I have heard different accounts of how much it cost.

Column: US public service needs support

The chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina illustrated the importance of public service and volunteerism as well as the devastating effects of a poorly prepared and understaffed domestic response team. Yet we still face significant obstacles in the way of building a larger, better qualified and more committed pool of public servants.

Faculty: No confidence in Schmidly, Koch, Harris

UNM's voting faculty have resolved that they have no confidence in President David Schmidly, Executive Vice President David Harris and Regents President Jamie Koch. According to a document provided by Faculty Governance Committee chairman Richard Wood, about 500 voting faculty members - some 28 percent of UNM's faculty - voted in favor of all five motions presented during the meeting Wednesday.

Students may have to pull their own weight, buy bus passes

Editor, Given the dismal state of the economy, it seems unlikely that the University and the State will continue subsidizing free bus rides for staff and students. It was fun while it lasted, but the time may have come for us to once again pull our own weight.

Cow bones are among the scattered waste on the West Mesa. Albuquerque Police are pulling shifts scouring the area for human remains after the bones of 11 people were found there.

Search continues for remains (Video)

Every day, the sun's rays beat down on the West Mesa, bleaching every bone they touch. It's not uncommon to find skeletons of cows, dogs and the occasional antelope among patches of dead grass and tumbleweeds on the mesa, just a 30-minute drive from campus.

Lobos hope to keep their focus at CSU

Getting off track happens to every team, especially young ones. Head coach Steve Alford said he is hoping the UNM men's basketball team will stay focused in its trip to Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, where the Lobos will take on Colorado State. But UNM won't face the same Rams who suffered a 68-50 thrashing in The Pit on Jan.

Run for president if you want to change how Obama lives

Editor, I would like to respond to a letter that was published on Feb. 12 by Daniel Martinez titled "Obama a hypocrite for asking CEOs to reduce their salaries." His complaint is of President Barack Obama asking major corporate CEOs to put limits or caps on their salaries and comparing the position of the presidency to that of a corporate CEO.

Faculty presents motion to oust regents president

The faculty meeting fell on Ash Wednesday, and biology professor Maggie Werner-Washburne was quick to draw a connection between the events. "It's a reminder to all of us that redemption is possible and that miracles are possible," she said. However, Werner-Washburne didn't hold out much hope for the University if faculty did not issue a vote of no confidence in Regents President Jamie Koch.
