Artists mix in collaboration classroom

Recording studios and fencing classes - that's what you'll get at church-turned-performance space 1Kind Studios. Studio manager Adrian Griego and sound engineer Roman Garcia came up with the name long before the studio opened in June at 1016 Coal Ave. S.W.

Schmidly, regents support entertainment over faculty

Editor, I wonder if President David Schmidly and the regents read the newspapers or watch TV news. As I was reading the Daily Lobo story on how poor UNM is and how it needs to freeze workers' salaries and hiring, I saw a TV story on how UNM is getting ready to spend $60 million for renovations to The Pit.

Abortion not comparable to modern civil rights injustices

Editor, I was appalled to read the column titled "Abortion a modern-day injustice" in Monday's Daily Lobo not only for its staunch hypocrisy but its clever misuse of "the facts." Comparing the injustices of slavery and racism to that of abortion and the reproductive rights of women is about as naive and ludicrous as one might consider arguing.

NM not alone in lacking marijuana dispensaries

Since medicinal marijuana was legalized in New Mexico in 2007, there are about 200 medical cannabis users in the state, according to Reena Szczepanski, director of Drug Policy Alliance New Mexico. However, patients have no place to legally purchase the drug, except in California, Szczepanski said.

Baggin' it up

Bag-maker Fernando Webb knows what makes a good bag, and it isn't big leather tassels. "They seem unnecessary - they just look stupid," Webb said. "And I really can't stand the designer labels like Chanel or Louis Vuitton, where it's their print all over the bag.

Correction

The letter to the editor published in Monday's Daily Lobo, "Schrader's lifestyle teaches responsible global citizenship," was written by Chuck Hoskins, a part-time instructor at UNM. The letter has no affiliation with Charles Hoskins, the lecturer for the Naval ROTC program.

Rock 'n' roll fling

People want a saint but with a cowboy mouth. Or so Cavale tells Slim in "Cowboy Mouth," a 1971 play written by Sam Shepard and his then-lover, musician Patti Smith. The play, produced by SCRAP Productions and opening today at the Box Performance Space at 1025 Lomas Blvd.

Americans should focus passion to improve community, country

Editor, I never thought I could be this moved by politics. I never thought I would be moved to donate money to a political campaign. I never thought I would cry at an election speech. I never thought I would wake up with feelings of hope and opportunity because of an election.

Lab lets students tinker with hydraulics

Like a hands-on science museum, UNM's hydraulics laboratory lets students explore real-world applications of scientific principles. The laboratory, in the Centennial Engineering Center, features a 50-foot-long, customizable arroyo simulator, a water-turbine simulator and equipment to let students test aerodynamic drag on cars and the effects of water pressure on fire hoses.

UNM will reallocate $30M to ensure bond repayment

A total of $30 million in funding that was put aside in 2007 will be reallocated to programs that could help the University raise money to pay off its debts. The $30 million was accrued from the sale of system revenue bonds in 2007, and the University has decided to invest it in as-yet undecided programs to ensure the University can repay everyone who purchased the bonds, said Andrew Cullen, associate vice president for institutional planning.

A society of Schraders would lack government, infrastructure

Editor, I thought Chuck Hoskins' praise to Don Schrader is absolutely ridiculous. Don Schrader is an overtly gay man who contributes nothing to our society, who intently lives below the U.S. poverty level so he doesn't have to pay taxes to Uncle Sam. He has no medical insurance for himself and walks around 80 percent naked when the weather allows him to do so.

Ken Jeong as King Argotron, left, argues the outcome of the medieval roleplay with Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Augie and Paul Rudd as Danny in "Role Models."
Culture

Comical flick succeeds on mischief, sincerity

The movie "Role Models" is clichéd in its comedic-yet-sincere formula. But the sincerity of the characters and dialogue raises this film above typical Hollywood comedy. Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott play Danny Donahue and Wheeler, a duo who drive a truck shaped like a minotaur, campaigning against drugs and promoting an equally bad energy drink, Minotaur.

Column: A Cowboys fan embraces reality

Public relations quotes are a dime a dozen. But if you're lucky, you'll get a few gems in your time working in the journalism industry. So far, I have about three that I consider golden: "You guys are the experts," Rocky Long said, referring to the media.

UNM loses to Runnin' Rebels in penalty kicks

The UNM women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Oct. 5, as the Lobos fought hard but fell to UNLV in an overtime shootout. With the loss, UNM finished 8-5-6 overall and 3-3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. UNM broke through in the 70th minute on a goal by Alexis Ball to tie the Runnin' Rebels 1-1, but the Lobos didn't find the back of the net again.

UNM quit composting for looks, safety

Two years ago, UNM's dead leaves were composted at the North Golf Course, but the Physical Plant Department now throws the organic matter out with the rest of the trash. As of spring 2007, the truckloads of dead leaves that are removed and bagged are dumped in the City of Albuquerque's landfill.

Dining hall debuts program to reduce leftover-food waste

La Posada donated more than $200 worth of food to the Road Runner Food Bank during the kickoff of its conservation program, Trayless Mondays. On Trayless Mondays, students are asked to not use trays when they eat at La Posada. "What we're hoping to accomplish is to reduce the amount of wasted food," said Donna Provost, director of the dining hall.

We must keep our pre-election sense of patriotism, duty

Children's Campus employees not valued or paid enough

Editor, According to the payroll directory on reserve in Zimmerman Library, President David Schmidly makes almost $400,000 annually. David Harris, his executive vice president, makes almost $300,000 a year. While these cats speak of saving money in this time of economic strife, child care providers at the UNM Children's Campus make less than $20,000 a year.
