Since March 2018, a caravan of migrants from Central America began their journey to ask for asylum in the U.S.. The caravan grew, and more people desperately ran from the violence and hunger experienced in their home countries.
The Annual South Valley Muertos y Marigolds Parade on Sunday Nov. 5, 2017 started at El Centro Familiar and made its way to the Westside Community Center. Crowds waited throughout the South Valley in anticipation. Some participants and onlookers painted themselves with skull makeup and dressed up in various Day of the Dead motifs. The parade showcased decorated cars and bikes, along with music. After the parade was over, people headed to the Westside Community Center to enjoy music, food and shopping.
The Annual Lantern Fest took place on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017. Crowds gathered at Sandia Speedway Park to enjoy quality time together under the spectacle of hundreds of lanterns.
The 45th Annual Harvest Festival took place at El Rancho de las Golondrinas Sept. 30 through Oct. 1. Las Golondrinas is considered a living museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It maintains examples and activities which illustrate life in the period of Spanish rule in the Southwest during the the 18th and 19th centuries. The land was purchased in the 1930s by Leonora Curtin, who is famous for creating Santa Fe’s Native Market. The museum opened its doors to visitors in 1972. “The Three Peoples Murals” is located in the west wing of Zimmerman Library. The mural is composed of four different paintings created in 1939 by Kenneth Adams.
