Senior forward James Rogers recorded his fourth goal of the 2013 season Friday night, leading the No. 9 UNM men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Santa Clara in the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational.

Off an assist from senior midfielder Michael Calderon, the senior forward Rogers kicked the ball high over Santa Clara goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh and into the net at the 64-minute, 53-second mark. Calderon registered his second assist this year.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of soccer games, but I think Santa Clara played it how they needed to play it,” said UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein, whose team improved to 3-0-1 on the season. “The way they pressed with the front five, we didn’t really play through it that well the first half. I thought we started figuring it out in the second half.”

The Lobos finished with a 15-6 shot advantage. Santa Clara (0-4-0) attempted just one shot-on-goal, saved by UNM senior goalkeeper Michael Lisch. UNM had four shots-on-goal.

In a scoreless second half, UNM had a 6-1 advantage on shots but neither team posted a shot-on-goal. Santa Clara committed nine fouls and received two yellow cards on forward Keigo Kameya and defender Parker Holland. The Broncos had 13 fouls for the game.

The match started one hour late after lightning strikes prompted a weather delay.

In Friday’s earlier game, No. 11 Cal State Northridge earned a 4-1 victory over Central Arkansas

UNM will conclude the Lobo Invite at 6 p.m. Saturday against Cal State Northridge. Central Arkansas will play Santa Clara at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Volleyball
At the Johnson Center, UNM won its first game of the Lobo Classic with a 3-1 victory over Towson. The set scores were 25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17.

Junior outside hitter Chantale Riddle had a team-high 15 digs for UNM (6-1), adding nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker Elsa Krieg recorded 11 kills, while sophomore setter provided 37 assists and 16 digs.

UNM plays two more matches in the classic today, taking on Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. and Northern Arizona at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer
At the Saint Mary’s Classic in Moraga, Calif., UNM fell to 2-5 on the season following a 1-0 loss to the host Gaels. Briana Campos scored the Saint Mary’s goal in the second half.

Despite outshooting Saint Mary’s 6-5 and holding a 4-3 shots-on-goal edge, the Lobos dropped its fifth one-goal game. Four times this season, UNM lost 1-0. Goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich made two saves.

The Lobos continues its California road trip Sunday against Pacific at noon Sunday.
