The hooting and hollering echoed from the Club Level at The Pit throughout the arena. The New Mexico men’s soccer team had just locked up its second highest NCAA tournament seed ever.
The NCAA selection committee on Monday awarded UNM, the Conference USA regular-season champion, with a No. 7 seed for the national tournament, slated to begin this week.
Following a first-round bye, the Lobos (11-5-2) will host either George Mason or William and Mary at 7 p.m. Sunday. Those teams battle in the first round on Thursday.
In 2005, the NCAA awarded UNM with a No. 2 seed. The team eventually played Maryland in the championship game that season.
Competing in C-USA for the first time in 2013, UNM won the league regular-season title with a 7-1-1 record in a schedule that included wins over second-place Old Dominion and third-place Alabama Birmingham.
The Lobos then lost in the C-USA tournament semifinals to Tulsa despite holding the top seed.
