Women's soccer: Lobo women drop two on soccer road trip

UNM’s difficulties against the Big Ten Conference persisted this past weekend with a pair of 1-0 road losses: to Minnesota on Friday, and to Michigan State on Sunday.

The Lobos are now 2-12 against Big Ten teams, the most recent victory coming against Nebraska in 2010. UNM fell to 2-5 on the 2015 season with the Mountain West opener on Sept. 25. Before then, the team has an intrasquad scrimmage this Saturday.

“If you take this game and our 90-minute mentality and tweek a couple of things before we start conference play, I am pretty pleased with where we are despite our record,” Lobo head coach Heather Dyche said in a statement.

On Sunday, UNM and Michigan State stayed scoreless through regulation time. Seven minutes into overtime, Spartan forward Allyson Krause netted the game winner from 15 yards out to the far post. Forward Kristelle Yewah and midfielder Kelli Timar provided assists on the play.

Lobo goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich saved three Spartan attempts before surrendering the OT game-winner. New Mexico outshot Michigan State 16-11, including 9-4 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime. Defender Amber Edemann took five shots, two on goal, while forward Madisyn Olguin fired three shots with two on goal.

On Friday, Minnesota defender/forward Maddie Gaffney had an unassisted goal for the game’s only score.
