Band finds remedy on the porch

Mix equal parts Utah mountains and Southern California sunshine and you get a singable, slightly twangy, alternative-country, or as Remedy Motel calls it, porch rock. On their second independently released album A Better Life, these Utah boys turned California surfer kids have struck on an idea and a sound they like to call Americana-infused music.

Franti inspired by Sept. 11

Michael Franti and his band Spearhead are known for their political music and have been called a part of the resistance. This outspoken artist has got a lot to say, and with music as his tool, he speaks what some might call the unspeakable. Daily Lobo: Can you discuss why you felt it necessary to speak with a college newspaper? Michael Franti: One reason I really enjoy speaking and playing at universities is because young people don't have the attachment to the commercial world, for lack of a better word.

Austen's 'Pride' a decent remake

Modernizing books into film usually sets literary fans up for a huge letdown. When filmmakers decide to make updated versions of a time-honored classic like, say, Pride and Prejudice, it seems like their creative juices are exhausted and they are otherwise incapable of producing an original script.

UNMH shows unusual x-ray photograms

Leigh Anne Langwell's art crosses the conventional boundaries of what is expected from photographs - in fact, they're not even called photographs.ˇ Instead, these unique forms are called photograms, a technique which produces photos that look like giant X-ray images, oftentimes obscuring what the viewer is actually looking at.

Frequent EPs keep artist in the fold

Ben Folds is a silly guy. Since July 2003 Folds has put out three EPs with his musician friend. His fourth, The Bens, will hit online stores next week. Some would say putting out four EPs only months apart with a handful of songs on each is a strange marketing plan, but Folds, in his normal quirky fashion, thinks otherwise.

A woman's world

The new art show in the ASA Gallery imposed restrictions on who could enter the exhibit - they had to be women, and they had to be connected to UNM. "People were so defensive that only women were allowed to enter the show," curator Ana Urquilla said. "That was part of the point, to have a show that got a reaction.

Artist displays raw emotion

UNM graduate student David Leigh has a way of expressing the most primitive of human emotions without ever saying a word. With only graphite on paper he is able to communicate something visceral and raw that he hopes will elicit a response in everyone who visits his show, "Gold, Golden the Drawings of David Leigh," at The Walls Gallery.

UNM artists search for new perspective

When it comes to finding the answer to escaping one's own perspective or creating first-aid techniques for everyday life, Todd Anderson and Aaron Winston may be on the right track. Their senior art theses, "First Aid for Beautiful People" and "Nadir" give some very likely and reasonable theories.
