Poor poetry - Saturday night a gathering of poets, actors, dancers and musicians celebrated National Poetry Month at the Harwood Art Center. Music stole the show; poetry was lost in the shuffle. Not all poetry should be combined with other art forms.
by Lisa J. Tabet Daily Lobo Amid controversy and praise, "The Laramie Project," a play about the murder of Matthew Shepard opens in Theatre X Thursday night. The play, directed by Denise Schulz, has been performed at universities across the nation with vast success and is a somber depiction of a town torn by conflicting emotions and faced with a crime too terrible to believe.
The University Chorus and the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque have peace on their minds. In honor of that notion, the two performed "Dona Nobis Pacem," translated to "give us peace," by Ralph Vaughan Williams free Tuesday night at Popejoy Hall. "Vaughan Williams is one of the greatest composers of chorus music and I was afraid that the topic of the piece might be appropriate and it was," said Bradley Ellingboe, professor of music at UNM and coordinator of the University Chorus.
April is National Poetry Month and though very little was planned to commemorate the celebration on campus, Todd Eddy took the initiative creating the haiku-a-tree project. Beginning Monday, 97 haikus were hung from the trees near the northeast corner of the Duck Pond.
This Friday will not be your typical day on campus - in recognition of the 23rd annual Earth Day, UNMPIRG will sponsor a variety of activities and events, all centering on environmental education. "Little Otik" is a dark comedy about a couple that after having no luck conceiving, decides to dig up a tree root and whittle a child.
Even after all this time, people still give a funny look when they hear the word Americana. What does it mean? Americana is pretty much a catchall term for anyone who plays music that sounds like old-time country music, but doesn't exactly look like an old-time country music type person.

The festival took place last weekend in two theaters at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Sin Fronteras celebrates through film the movement of the people and current topics concerning youth, gender, people of color, people of Latin America, indigenous resistance and queer issues, through film.
BlackStreet wasn't kidding around when they named their new album Level II, they really have hit the second level of their music career. And this isn't to knock old hits like "No Digity," which was deemed one of the greatest pop songs by Rolling Stone and MTV, but Level II shows off a new, more mature BlackStreet.
Yerba Buena has to be sick of being compared to Ozomatli, but with so few Latin/hip-hop fusion bands hitting the semi-mainstream, it's hard to avoid. Whereas Ozomatli is a 50/50 combo of American influences and Latin grooves, Yerba Buena comes off as 60/40 or maybe even 70/30 with the emphasis on the Latin side of things.

“Mulletville” is a movie that lives up to its moniker — this flick is definitely business up front and all party in the back. Written and directed by Tony Leahy, who also stars as Dens, “Mulletville” is loaded with the hockey hair, but the movie is also about a kid tracing his roots and trying to exact revenge on his high school tormentors.

As a talented ballet and flamenco dancer in Spain, he has studied extensively and toured all around the world.
