Obamacare not socialist despite GOP accusations

Editor, On October 1, 2013 the United States government partially shut down. This was due to a budget dispute between the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, over the funding of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Vote against intrusive abortion proposal

Editor, On Nov. 19, Albuquerque voters will decide whether the city government should interfere with a woman’s decision to end a pregnancy. Before going to the polls, voters should ask themselves, “Is this really the government’s business?”

SAE allegations already reported and still incorrect

Dear Daily Lobo, Thank you for your participation in the UNM Lobo, which teaches journalism to a new generation. I’d like to give you a little feedback on last Friday’s article, “SAE: 15 years of sexual assault allegations.”

Lobo fans huge part in winning Saturday’s game

I want to thank you for coming out and being part of our win over New Mexico State on Saturday. It was a special night for our football team and our entire university, and to do it in front of a sold-out student section was invaluable.

Regulation needed for guns, not games

Editor, I am writing in regards to the political cartoon in the Sept. 18 issue of the Daily Lobo. The cartoon featured a suited Democrat Donkey telling a man entering the Washington Navy Yard with a gun to ‘Halt! Or I’ll pass more laws!’

Anonymity necessary to re-establish free speech

Editor, If I were a part of the staff at the Daily Lobo, I would reconsider the Facebook requirement and return to a system of anonymity. First, let me say that I am an UNM alumnus and very proud of it.

The Setonian
Opinion

Anonymity has a place in free exchange of ideas

Editor, The Daily Lobo has no obligation to provide a forum for commenters on its content, much less to enable the anonymous name-calling, word salads and spam that populate many comment threads, but by restricting the privilege of posting comments to Facebook users, the Lobo is tacitly endorsing an agenda of profit-motivated surveillance and sousveillance.

Embracing brutality will not create stronger men

Editor, The case of male violence is not normal levels of testosterone. Studies discussed at the 1995 annual Endocrine Society revealed that men with low testosterone are more violent. One UCLA study was on 54 men with low testosterone. They were edgy, irritable and angry.

26F would offer equality to DACA students

Editor, We, as students who participated in an endeavor to bring Resolution 26F to ASUNM, feel that the Daily Lobo’s article on the matter in the Thursday, September 12 issue was somewhat inaccurate and may have overlooked the main focus of the issue.

Media misrepresents Pope Francis interview

Editor, The Jesuit magazine “America” published an interview with Pope Francis. During the 12,000-word interview, Pope Francis commented on artificial contraceptives, abortion and homosexuality. Pope Francis stated that the Catholic Church cannot talk about these issues all of the time.

Tyczkowski’s column is strong in spirit, not facts

Editor, Thank you, John Tyczkowski, for showing your open support of nuclear power in the press in the Sept. 20 issue of the Daily Lobo in your column, “Thorium better for nuclear power.” We need more people outside of just the nuclear power community voicing their support for nuclear power.

Congress needs more interdependency

Editor, My experience as a counselor and consultant informs me that the cause of our elected Congressmen being unable to resolve any of the problems we currently have is obvious, and that cause is that those Congressmen do not talk to each other.

United States’ possible attack on Syria pointless

Editor, In today’s 24-hour news cycle, our nation has developed a remarkably short attention span. It has been just over a week since President Obama’s speech regarding the Syrian Civil War, and I fear I may already be too late in writing this letter

Task force should consider new plans for scholarship

Editor, Recently a public task force formed to debate how to reform the so-called Lottery Scholarship since it will soon be underfunded. Why do I refer to it as the so-called Lottery Scholarship? Because it is actually a higher education scholarship.

Oil consumption only fuels global conflicts

Editor, I have ridden in no car since April 7, 2001 — almost 12 and a half years ago. I have owned no car since 1979 — 34 years ago. I had a driver’s license for 36 years, but I did not renew it when it expired in 2000.

World has no need for US to be the police

“We can no longer be the world’s policeman.” You hear this on both sides of the aisle these days, with such a supercilious and reluctant air! Really? Who asked us to be the world’s policeman in the first place?

The Setonian
Opinion

One-sided activists don’t tell whole story

Editor, I would like to begin by saying that I appreciate the fact that the Daily Lobo is tackling important topics such as the attack that is being mounted against women’s health care providers here in Albuquerque.

The Setonian
Opinion

US involvement in Syria is hypocritical, not moral

Editor, We all feel morally outraged over war crimes. And dilemmas arise as to how to stop them. How do we somehow ‘punish’ just the perpetrators without perpetrating more death and destruction on innocent people ourselves?
