Do not protest, but seek private counsel from leaders

Editor, With many Muslims involved in rebellion against their leaders, one has to wonder: Is this rebellion permissible according to Islam? This question has largely gone unnoticed in the media coverage of the so-called “Arab Spring.” However, Al-Jazeera and Fox News didn’t teach Islam to the world; the Prophet Muhammad did. The Prophet Muhammad said, “Whoever wishes to advise the ruler, then let him not mention it in public, rather let him take the ruler by his hand.

More APD in campus area, community feedback welcome

Editor, Perhaps you have noticed more APD officers in the campus area lately? Since February, APD has been conducting a “crime reduction initiative” in our community. Members of the neighborhood and business associations, along with UNM security, have been meeting with Sgt.

Comments ‘unintelligible,’ discourage participation

Editor, Dialogue in the comments section of the Daily Lobo website is extremely off-putting. Polarized and uninformed viewpoints abound, but that’s not the only problem. Some comments are obviously trolls trying a crude hand at sarcasm or some other form of humor.

Obama cartoon racist only to those who want to see racism

Editor, It is interesting to watch the spectacle unfold in the wake of the cartoon depicting President Barack Obama as Rafiki from the movie “The Lion King.”  I believe that there is more to this than may initially meet the eye of the common reader. The editor-in-chief was seemingly forced to apologize, talk to the “African-American community” (whomever that may be) and spark a training forum for “sensitivity training.” Why?  Is the cartoonist implying that Obama is equivalent to a chimp?
