'Iron Man' a cinematic dream come true

Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Tony Stark. They share so many similarities: Alcoholic? Check. Rich? Check. Egotistical? Check. Runs around in a suit of powered battle armor? Check - Well, maybe not. After seeing "Iron Man," it wouldn't be all that surprising to discover Downey leads a second life as a superhero.

Bond set for man accused of attack SANTA FE (AP) - Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Japanese man accused of attacking an Englishman speaking on "thought transference" during an international conference in Santa Fe. State District Judge Michael Vigil on Friday set the bond for 33-year-old Kazuki Hirano of Yokohama, who has been held in the Santa Fe County jail.

Campus preachers aren't trying to convert students

Editor, The preachers who graced UNM with hollers of hellfire deserve a second glance. I had the pleasure of meeting these same people at the University of New Orleans in 2005 and Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003. The sound was the same - crass accusations and dour damnations.

Swap promotes two-wheeled travel

Cyclists waited in line for deals on wheels Saturday. The line for the BikeABQ bike swap stretched through half of Sport Systems' 1605 Juan Tabo N.E. parking lot and continued down the plaza sidewalk. The other half of the lot was sectioned off by plastic fencing and filled with rows of bicycles propped on racks.

To win 'war on terror,' U.S. should mind its business

Editor, On April 27, the international press reported that the president of the Islamic State of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, told the U.S. and the U.K. to leave the Taliban alone. A few hours later, the U.S. media reported that the Taliban and al-Qaida had attempted to assassinate Karzai.

New editor in chief takes reins at Lobo

The Daily Lobo has a new editor in chief. Previously the newspaper's managing editor, Damian Garde began his career in journalism at 15 when he wrote for the Youth Express page of the Albuquerque Journal. "I was good at writing, and I wanted to be paid for that," he said.

Sports in Brief

Baseball The Lobos won a three-game series at BYU over the weekend led by an explosive offense. UNM edged the Cougars 9-7 on Friday, pounding out 15 hits. Mike Brownstein led the Lobos, going 3-for-6 with a run and two RBIs. Pitcher Bobby LaFramboise picked up the win to improve to 5-2 on the season, and Clinton Cox earned his third save of the year.

Event raises funds to fight cancer

UNM's chapter of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority hosted its annual nacho night to raise money for cancer research. About 200 students hung out, played board games and ate nachos Saturday. Lucia Cook, the sorority's vice president of fraternity relations, said the event took a lot of preparation.

Disabled students deserve study area in Zimmerman

Editor, Though it is true that Zimmerman Library is open and running, it is also the case that much of the available services for students with disabilities have been negatively affected by the renovation. Over half of the Alice Clark Room was taken during the renovation of the library.

Ramirez wins GPSA top spot; opponent hands in resignation

Christopher Ramirez was elected GPSA president Friday - the same day his opponent, Danny Hernandez, resigned. Ramirez won the seat with 278 votes, while Hernandez got 172. About 8 percent of eligible students voted in the Graduate and Professional Student Association election.

Editor, Five years of occupation has shown that America cannot impose democracy on one country. But May 10 may reveal that we can assist elsewhere. Eastward, as the sun rises, Burma will hold a constitutional referendum on May 10 and, like the sun, its fate may set in the West.

Kings to continue practicing at Johnson

The Albuquerque Kings, a wheelchair basketball team, will be allowed to continue practicing at Johnson Gym. A new contract was worked out between the management of Johnson Center and a UNM group called the Associated Students for Empowerment. Johnson Center management had told the Kings they would have to find a new place to practice if they couldn't afford the gym's annual fee.

UNM literary, arts magazine celebrates 30th anniversary

Writers, poets, painters, musicians and art lovers gathered as Conceptions Southwest, UNM's fine arts and literary magazine, celebrated the release of its 30th issue. Since 1978, the magazine has served as a creative outlet for the University community. Clara Boling, Conceptions Southwest editor, said choosing what goes into the magazine is a democratic process.

Track to finish season at home

Throughout the 2008 track and field season, UNM athletes have set school records, qualified for prestigious meets and enjoyed one of its finest seasons in years. And the Lobos will get a chance to show off their talents in front of a home crowd for the first time this season, hosting the Don Kirby Invitational on Saturday.

Environmental campaigns are ineffective and useless

Editor, I have become a fan of the Daily Lobo's editorial page. Without the continuously conflicting opinions, I think my mornings on the shuttle would be absolutely dreadful. Aside from that, I would like to address the letter about the environment by Samuel Chavez on Thursday.
