The UNM men's basketball team has its work cut out for it with three of its next four games being on the road. But if the Lobos play anything like they did in consecutive blowout wins, they can quickly make up a lot of ground in the Mountain West Conference.
Love is in the air - or at least members of the Black Student Union hope it will be today in the SUB. BSU will have a speed dating event noon on Wednesday in the SUB Ballroom. Participants will be required to register before the free event. Ogechi Chibueze, president of the organization, said the event is for students to get to know each other.
Students in African-American Studies say their program is being neglected. Carolyn Gonzales, University spokeswoman, said students have approached deans at the College of Arts and Sciences with concerns about the future of the program. Student Tim Green IV said students are upset that an interim director had not yet been appointed after the program's director, Finnie Coleman, was made acting dean of University Studies in January.
Editor, In his letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday, Andres Saenz argues with a previous letter writer decrying the widely-known failures of abstinence-only education but seeks to only further establish what is already obvious. Saenz's opposition to comprehensive sex education is not based on a practical evaluation of the consequences of keeping children presumably ignorant about sex but, rather, a didactic insistence on the superiority of his own religious convictions.
In his final year of NCAA eligibility, Max Jones has something to prove for the UNM men's tennis team. And by starting the year off with an 8-3 record and a No. 35 national ranking in singles, Jones is making the most of his senior season. "To be ranked at all in the NCAA rankings is an achievement," head coach Alan Dils said.
Editor, I want to respond to Wayne Silva's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday. He states, "There's no point in trying to shield our children from sex." I truly beg to differ. I strongly believe that children should be taught, during puberty, that they should not have sex unless they are ready for a life-long commitment to their spouse, and only if they are ready for the great responsibility of raising, educating and providing for their children.

Rabies confirmed in Grant County fox SILVER CITY (AP) - Rabies has been confirmed in a fox from Grant County that had been trying to enter a kennel containing three dogs, state authorities said. The dogs killed the fox, and the owner sent the body to a state lab in Santa Fe for testing because of the animal's unusual behavior.
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could not have asked for a better occasion. Speaking at the 29th anniversary celebrations of the country's Islamic Revolution, Ahmadinejad, one of the student leaders who participated in the seizure of the American embassy, reiterated his now familiar position on Iran's right to pursue a nuclear program.
The Mammal Eggs don't want to be famous. "We do everything possible not to promote ourselves," violinist Rosie Hutchinson said. "It's sort of uncomfortable to have admiration from people you don't know." The Mammal Eggs are an experimental rock band that formed at UNM.
Student David Draper can't get into the classes he needs. Draper, a biology major, wants to attend UNM's medical school. He shares classes with students in the Bachelors of Arts and Medicine program - a degree plan that allows freshman looking to enter medical school to get their bachelor's degree in four years.
Editor, I have some concerns regarding the Raza Graduation ceremony. In my humble opinion, any group that has specific ethnic requirements is no better than the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis. Such groups, instead of bringing people together, segregate and isolate them.
Track and Field Distance runner Lee Emanuel had a standout race Friday, breaking the UNM record for the men's mile, clocking a time of 4:02.47. Emanuel broke a 24-year-old record set by Ibrahim Hussein by 1.74 seconds. Emanuel - a junior transfer from Hastings, England - finished eighth overall and sixth among college runners at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.

Art students are taking their work to new levels through a program that takes them to new places. Students in UNM's Land Arts of the American West program presented their work Friday at the [AC]2 Gallery at 301 Mountain Rd. NE. Students went on two 23-day trips through different ecosystems all over the Southwest and Mexico.
ASUNM senators will set up a makeshift office at Dane Smith Hall this week. The temporary change of office is to make senators more accessible to students, said Matt Barnes, vice president of the Associated Students of UNM. "The reason we're going to do that is because we had a town hall meeting last semester, and in that meeting, a lot of student groups said that they would like to see ASUNM reach out in different ways," he said.
UNM forced Wyoming to commit costly errors en route to a 45-point win Saturday at The Pit. The Lobos scored 38 points off of Wyoming's 23 turnovers and won 100-55. UNM head coach Steve Alford said Saturday's performance was as good as it gets. "Needless to say, I don't know if we can play much better," he said.
J.R. Giddens had the best game of his career Saturday, and it was the best individual performance fans at The Pit have seen in some time. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the senior guard's performance was that he was unselfish and didn't disrupt the team game, UNM head coach Steve Alford said.
