Students can and should be active in U.S. politics

Editor, I am writing in response to the editorial published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday regarding GPSA's resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The opinion comes from one of the many apathetic young students of UNM. This student proves to have little knowledge of the historical role of university students throughout the world.

Gay people don't deserve fair and equal treatment

Editor, In response to several liberal opinions on homosexuality, I take a different approach. Many supporters point to the notion that couples who engage in homosexual relationships are consenting, loving couples. The supporters contend that discrimination against this group is on the same level as discrimination during the Civil Rights era.

Bible not a reliable source for making public policy

Editor, I have read several articles and letters regarding the Bible and the issue of homosexuality. First, religion is created by human beings. For example, Warren Jeffs presided over a splinter group of Mormonism that still believes in the covenant of plural marriage.

The owner of Scalo in Nob Hill wants to put his money to good use. Steve Paternoster said he will donate a portion of Wednesday's sales to Tiny Stars, an organization dedicated to exposing and stopping the commercial sexual exploitation of children around the world.

Science, religion don't have to be in opposition

Editor, This letter is in response to David Martinez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday. It was my good fortune to be touring the UNM campus, and I was lucky enough to have read Martinez's piece of zealotry. I must say that I applaud the general sentiment.

NCAA investigating potential violations

UNM announced Friday that the Athletics Department received notices from the NCAA of four potential violations regarding members of the football coaching staff. Three unnamed coaches, not including head coach Rocky Long, helped four recruits and one student athlete get course credit they did not earn from Fresno Pacific University, the notice states.

Love should not be limited by artificial boundaries

Editor, In his letter to the Daily Lobo published Tuesday, Jason Brown wrote, "As a Christian, I do not believe that homosexuality is a morally acceptable lifestyle." In its general appeal to the authority of the Christian religion, the statement appears to be speaking for all Christians.

Staff Council didn't vote on hate crime proposals

Editor, I am writing to correct the impression given in an article published Wednesday that the Staff Council rejected the hate crimes proposals. In fact, the executive of the Staff Council withdrew consideration of this measure from the last council meeting agenda, so the body never had a chance to discuss it or vote for or against it.

Selfishness can lead to discrimination, separation

Editor, Why is there so much separation? Each day, I walk out of my dormitory to start another day. I walk all around UNM, dine at La Posada, engage in frequent dormitory antics, attend parties, and spend a great deal of time observing people. From my experience, humanity brings me joy and feels great to be involved in, but there is a trend I find disconcerting - our continual tendency to produce psychological and conceptual separations between ourselves and others.

Homosexuality isn't wrong even if called unnatural

Editor, Recent letters on the question of the naturalness of homosexuality have gotten me thinking. What's natural anyway? Maybe natural means the way things would be if humans weren't always messing things up. Whatever the definition is, certainly we heterosexuals never do anything unnatural.

Center can benefit from your garage

Staff report The Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice is beating the odds by keeping its doors open, a volunteer for the center said. "One of the things with the center is that it is a miracle that it keeps going," Frances Daniels-Thompson said. "Most organizations get grants from the government or major donors, and we just don't have that.

Professors rely too much on one-sided textbooks

Editor, I am generally in support of the idea that professors choose their own textbooks and that any book will have the agenda of the author in mind. But recently, I have encountered a situation where the books professors choose are so one-sided that rather than feeling like I'm learning about the subject I'm paying to learn, I end up listening to the soap-box ramblings of someone I'm not allowed to disagree with.
