Poet infuses work with humor, history

Poetry is not about victory for slam poet Damien Flores. Flores, along with UNM Lobo Slam teammates Hakim Bellamy, Aaron Cuffee and Carlos Contreras, took second place among 20 teams in the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational at Eastern Michigan University on April 7.

Club brings Vegas to N.M.

Club 7 opened its doors to Downtown Albuquerque on Friday. Patrons stood outside in a long line waiting to enter the club at 515 Central Ave. N.W. Inside, it was packed with about 250 people. Club 7 replaced the Coliseum, but it has a completely different look and feel.

Censoring media bigotry should apply to pundits

Editor, It's nice to hear that CBS and MSNBC took the appropriate action by firing Don Imus for his recent on-air racist remarks. But I don't feel they went far enough, as the current mavericks of the talk-show radio networks continue to fill the airwaves with hateful and divisive rhetoric and stereotypes.

Tennis closes conference play

Throw the political bums out of the White House

Editor, Let me get this straight. Some say that Americans who want to bring U.S. troops home from the failure in Iraq hurt the morale of these troops, but that extending their tours to 15 months would not hurt their morale. According to President Bush, there isn't a civil war in Iraq, just pure evil.

Senior captains bid farewell

There couldn't have been a better way for the seniors to celebrate Sunday. Not only did the UNM women's tennis team sweep Air Force 7-0 to conclude Mountain West Conference play, but the team also acknowledged the accomplishments of four seniors - Iva Gersic, Nora Quintal, Allison Davis and Elisa Bonner - who concluded their regular-season collegiate careers Sunday at the UNM Tennis Complex.

Instead of a war czar, U.S. should seek a peacemaker

Editor, A Bush administration official told CNN recently that White House aides, with President Bush's blessing, are actively trying to hire a new point person to help pilot the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "There's an urgency to get this done," the official said, referring to the administration's new security plan for Iraq.

Engineering students hit the auction block

Students sold themselves to support women in engineering Friday. The Society of Women Engineers held a date auction in the SUB to raise money for its members to attend a national engineering conference. Participants were asked questions about themselves while they were onstage, including "Star Trek, or Star Wars?" Thirty-three men and women were up for bid.

Family-planning services help fight global warming

Editor, According to the recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming is "unequivocal," and the most likely culprits are people. It is time to open a second front in the battle against global warming by stressing the need for sustainable population growth.

Harris meets with group over saving golf course

UNM President David Harris met with about 100 people at the law school Sunday to talk about the future of the North Golf Course. The meeting was held because residents are concerned that UNM will commercially develop the golf course, said Sara Koplik, president of the North Campus Neighborhood Association. "We've watched it change over the last 20 years," she said. "This place is beloved."

Management of Iraq war requires new strategies

Editor, After reading Scott Darnell's rhetorical column about fear and hate of Iran on Thursday, I have to wonder if he also believes that we won the Vietnam War and that O.J. Simpson was innocent. There is no question that we must take a strong stance against the development of nuclear weapons by Iran, but how we go about it requires new thinking.

Co-op program combines experience and education

Alumnus Jayson Capps wanted a career in marketing, but he was majoring in fine arts. He signed up for UNM's Cooperative Education Program and worked as a marketing intern for Career Services for six semesters. After he graduated, the office hired him as a professional intern. "I was able to work under someone who could really give me some guidance," he said. "I learned things I never would have been exposed to with my fine arts major. Plus, I got a job after I graduated."

Multicultural Greeks bring color to campus

Greek life at UNM doesn't end on Sigma Chi Road. "A lot of people don't realize there's an entire group of multicultural Greeks, who don't have campus houses, don't participate in rush week and are very community-oriented," said Erica Gallegos, a member of the Lambda Theta Alpha Latin sorority.

Tuition increases should actually benefit students

Editor, The unanimous approval by the Board of Regents to increase tuition is absurd. Maybe if its reasons were a bit better, it wouldn't be. First of all, how does raising tuition help in hiring minority faculty? Does it cost more to hire minorities? I don't see how refraining from raising our tuition keeps the University from hiring minorities.

Seasoned squad to take reins

It's Donovan Porterie's show to run now. After the UNM football team lost starting quarterback Kole McKamey to a season-ending knee injury early last season, Porterie got a lot of unexpected playing time.

UNM focused on athletics, not students' education

Editor, While attending a lab last week, I realized where this University's priorities are focused. The lab instructor said that each student was to reuse a single pair of latex gloves for dissections. When asked why the class was instructed to reuse our gloves, the instructor said that the department cannot afford to allow students to constantly change dirty gloves.
