Play redefines younger generation

by Lesley Bell Daily Lobo 50-year-old men write plays about people in their 20s. And some people in their 20s are sick of it. UNM student Kristen Simpson cites these plays about 20-somethings written by 50-year-old men as one of her inspirations for writing her most recent play, "Let it Get to You," part of the Words Afire Festival.

Column: Sports team huddles for mid-season review

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo I've got this Magic 8-Ball. It's not like one of those regular 8-Balls that tells you, "Keep sniffing glue because it ain't coming true" or "Stop sending me queries, your stupidity is just too scary." OK, OK, the old-school Tyco 8-Balls didn't say that, but it would have been a funnier world if they did - with a lot less self-esteem, but hey, you win some, you lose some.

Letter: Sometimes conquest is the only way to freedom

Editor, I wish to respond to Cynthia Winland's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about this nation's history of bungling the idea of spreading freedom and democracy. My heart fell to the floor when she stated, "Military conquest has never spread the seeds of freedom.

Letter: Discussion of faith should consider humanist view

Editor, I agree with many of Bhavana Upadhyaya's sentiments in the letter from Tuesday's Daily Lobo, "Civilized forum needed to discuss religion at UNM." However, the author seems to focus on discussions between people of different faiths, implying that the differences between religions are the main issue.

Column: The world of football has turned into Twilight Zone

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo With the NFL season half over, you've got to wonder, what kind of world do we live in when Cincinnati is 7-2 and in the lead in its division? This is a crazy world we live in - one where a man who has a seven-year, $49 million contract complains that he is not making enough money and then criticizes the people who pay him that money.

Column: Owens must choose: Lose his voice or his career

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Congratulations, Terrell Owens. You have become the sixth player in NFL history to catch 100 touchdown passes, yet you are still the biggest dud in the league. It is a shame. If the man came down with a permanent case of laryngitis, he would be quite a star.

War-time film close to reality

by Scott Albright Daily Lobo Despite the exaggerations depicted in most war movies, "Jarhead" portrays the culture of the Marine Corps fairly well. I know this because I was a Marine. Being a machine gunner and having served two deployments in Iraq, I can say this movie represents the types of personalities inside the Corps.

Lost scraps find way to publication

He was hanging out at a friend's house, taking a moment to talk about "The Lone Surfer Tour," on which he is promoting his book of short stories, "The Lone Surfer of Montana," and Found Magazine, a publication that is in essence a collection of handwritten notes, lists and letters lost by one person and found by another.
