Keyboardist keeps metal album afloat

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo As a kid, schoolyard politics and a woefully simple view of the world meant there were only two kinds of ways to be cool: be a rocker or a rapper. As can be imagined, the two music genres from which these categories emanated, heavy metal and hip-hop, were mutually exclusive.

Letter: Reader confused about bigger euthanasia issues

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to Carolyn Johnson's letter regarding the Final Exit Network. While I share her confusion as to how an organization which endorses and apparently helps people practice euthanasia can operate in a state which regards assisted suicide as a felony, I am happy to say that her obvious confusion over the wider issue of euthanasia is all her own.

Letter: Patients have right to live and die with dignity

Editor, This is in response to Carolyn Johnson's comments about assisted suicide. The Final Exit Network does not actually "assist" anyone with suicide, but instead gives advice to people with terminal disease and no real hope of better health or reduced pain.

Letter: Final Exit volunteers show admirable morals

Editor, I am appalled at Carolyn Johnson's letter to the editor in Tuesday's Daily Lobo in response to an article titled "Assisting people in pain." Using the Bible as a piece of factual information to support your every moral claim is preposterous. The Bible is a work of allegorical literature that has been translated numerous times throughout history and is interpreted by many different denominations in a plethora of ways.

Comic strip becomes TV series

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo For all the controversy that Aaron McGruder puts into his daily comic strip, "The Boondocks," his most controversial moment might come from the first episode of the cartoon version he's making for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Runner speeds toward nationals

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Matt Henry has watched Cameron Clarke perform as one of New Mexico's top cross country runners since he was in high school. When Henry took over the job as head track and field and cross country coach at UNM in 2000, he wanted to build a successful program that featured the most talented local runners from New Mexico.

Letter: Most physicians do not support assisted suicide

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to the article in Thursday's Daily Lobo titled "Assisting people in pain." The issues surrounding assisted suicide and euthanasia are hotly debated among both academic and community-based physicians. Most well-performed surveys reveal a significant endorsement of physician-assisted suicide and, to a much lesser degree, euthanasia by physicians across the country.

Letter: Churches misconstrue Christ as 'hippie Jesus'

Editor, Ralph Arellanes Jr. has dropped some rather tempting bait in his letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, no doubt wanting a reaction, so I'm biting. I will not attempt to refute his claim that Republicans are ignorant of Scripture, except to say that the ignorance is not confined to any one particular political party.

Letter: Students should get to use $100 calculators on final

Editor, I am writing with regard to the decision made by the math department mid-semester to disallow calculators for the final exam for Math 162, given that the purchase of a calculator was required. This is a breach of contract. The syllabus for this course, like all syllabuses, is a written contract between students taking the course and the math department, of whom the instructor is a hired representative.

Letter: Campus computers are for education, not cyberfolly

Editor, I was at Zimmerman Library the other day, and I waited about 30 minutes for a computer to open up. Then I was in the lower level of the SUB today, waiting to use a computer. As I looked over people's shoulders I could see instant messages, chat rooms and personals.

Houston likely to sneak up on Chicago from behind

Letter: Historical role of U.S. fuels terrorists' insanity

Editor, Once again, someone completely misinterprets what they have read and makes something up to bolster their poorly thought-out case. No one, including W. Christopher Epler in his Friday letter, is asking for "good relations between terrorists and nonterrorists.

Editor, I recently attended my first play that was put on by the UNM theatre department. In order to accurately describe the profound enlightenment I experienced, I feel I must disclose my political affiliation - I am a Republican. The play was titled "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told," and it is best described as a gay interpretation of the Bible.
