Depeche Mode CD can't shake the '80s

by Joe Buffaloe Daily Lobo Yes, Depeche Mode is still around. After 25 years and 10 albums, lead singer Dave Gahan said band members felt there was unfinished business. Their latest effort, Playing the Angel, is still deeply rooted in their new-wave, goth-dance heritage.

Letter: Assisted-suicide group commits acts of murder

Editor, This is in response to the article "Assisting people in pain" in Thursday's Daily Lobo. I was extremely bothered when reading this article. Are the people who volunteer at the Final Exit Network not aware of the moral dilemma involved in this act called "self-assisted suicide," also known as euthanasia? I believe that this falls under the category of murder.

When good punks grow up

by Ali Patterson Daily Lobo Michael Jackson catches hell from critics for never wanting to grow up. He says he's like Peter Pan, as if you couldn't tell from his Neverland ranch, complete with carnival rides and playground equipment. The members of Mest, however, should catch hell from critics for growing up too fast.

Letter: Adam-and-Steve story intriguing, professional

Editor, I recently attended my first play that was put on by the UNM theatre department. In order to accurately describe the profound enlightenment I experienced, I feel I must disclose my political affiliation - I am a Republican. The play was titled "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told," and it is best described as a gay interpretation of the Bible.

Despite good swims, Lobos lose 2

by Andre Van Der Mewre Daily Lobo Two losses in the opening dual meet of the season didn't mean everything went wrong Friday and Saturday for the UNM swimming and diving team. The first UNM home meet ended up in a loss to Air Force, but the meet wasn't without its bright spots for the Lobos.

Blowout signals return to power

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo It is pretty standard practice for a walk-on to ride the bench. It is not so standard for a walk-on to be called to the bench because he has secured a conference win by the 25th minute. Former walk-on Jeff Rowland had a hat trick in the UNM men's soccer team's 7-2 win against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday night at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Letter: Call for peace is naive, ignorant of Middle East

Editor, Of course "Muslims and Americans want to live in peace," as W. Christopher Epler's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo claims. Many Americans are Muslim, by the way. It would behoove Epler to read the Francis Church editorial that he so sophomorically abuses with his "Yes, Virginia, terrorism is a symptom" phrase.

Letter: Bush, his supporters ignore Jesus' teachings

Editor, I would like to commend Colin Donoghue's article regarding the policies of the Bush administration and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is about time someone recognized that not all people who hold religion and Jesus close to their hearts are always conservative Republicans.

Letter: UNM wasn't candid about costs of health-care switch

Editor, I feel it prudent to comment on how the University of New Mexico has manipulated its employee health care to the point of redundancy. As a cancer patient, I am required to have outpatient hospital tests four times per year. My doctor, who is on the approved provider list, recently referred me for one of my tests.

Letter: Poverty, policy don't cause terrorism, only legitimate it

Editor, In response to W. Christopher Epler's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, in which he writes, "It's time to talk about causes and effects. It is relatively common knowledge among the nonbrain-dead that terrorism is a symptom, not a cause. And it's not even a complicated symptom.

Letter: The solution to traffic is for West Siders to bike to work

Editor, I'm a bicycle commuter who travels from Old Town to Paradise Hills every school day, and would like to share a few opinions and observations about all the traffic. During the time leading up to the last election, it was amusing to observe the supporters of the various mayoral candidates posturing and competing with one another to catch drivers' attention over the deluge of traffic along Coors Boulevard and Monta§o Road with either the promise of solving the traffic deadlock or the blaming of one another for the area's traffic woes.
