A tenacious D-lineman

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo Senior nose tackle Marcus Parker needs only one word to describe the kind of football player he is - tenacious. Parker said that's the only way to play. "That's how you have to play D-line," he said. "You have to play with intensity and be physical on every play.

Letter: Boycott UNM Starbucks, support local coffee shops

Editor, As UNM students, staff, and faculty enjoy their overpriced Starbucks coffee at Zimmerman Library, they are supporting a large multinational corporation with over 5,600 outlets worldwide. Meanwhile, local Albuquerque coffee shops - that might have been a more sensible and ethical business choice for UNM - are struggling just to survive against such giant corporate predators.

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Former UNM standout Keren Bentzur brought a lot of individual success to the Lobo track and field team. As the new assistant track and field coach, Bentzur said she hopes to help add more team success. Head coach Matt Henry has seen a lot of good things at UNM, and Bentzur was certainly one of his shining stars, he said.

Letter: Bush critics often belittle achievements of Iraqis

Editor, I am writing this letter in response to the Daily Lobo opinion column, "Iraqi situation deteriorates." The racial undertones of the article are hard to ignore. I find it immoral that the left is bent on dismissing the aspirations of the Iraqi people in order to use them to punish President Bush.

Question of the week

the daily lobo asks you: What do you think about the proposed policy that would suspend students from UNM who expressed extreme suicidal or homicidal thoughts to a therapist at the health center? See the Daily Lobo for more answers to Question of the week.

Letter: Metaphor too tasteless to have gone unnoticed

Editor, I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed the incredibly inappropriate remark used by Chris Narkun in his review of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." His comment that the film was "supposedly subjected to more trimming than a Jewish infant" offended me more than the usual conservative-bashing drivel often found in the Daily Lobo.

Solo act varies with each performance

Jen Stephenson and Alison Terry have created a flexible whirlwind. Those are the words Terry says are reasonable to describe the piece she and Stephenson are working on, titled "Rice For Breakfast." "I think it will be genuinely unlike anything anyone has experienced theatrically," Stephenson said.

Memoir of an atomic age

McAllister Hull was just 21 when he began working at Los Alamos Labs in 1944. "The work was interesting, the significance of the war was understood, and it never occurred to me to think of my age," Hull said in an e-mail interview. His memoir, Rider of the Pale Horse, documents his experience casting explosions for what would be the atomic bomb.

Letter: Proposed mental health policy a senseless move

Editor, I was appalled to read of a proposed policy to involuntarily withdraw students from UNM if they are deemed dangerous to themselves or others. Clearly, this flies in the face of common sense. To begin with, school may be the one distraction from such individual's problems that keeps them afloat and occupied in a productive way.

The event was part of Welcome Back Days and the third day students, faculty and staff could get free food courtesy of the University. Letter: Students still encouraged to seek mental help

Editor, We are concerned that students reading the headline, "Suicidal thoughts may get students kicked out," in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, will not seek help if they become suicidal. The headline implies that all students with suicidal thoughts are at risk of being kicked out of UNM.

Family values cross cultures

Americans aren't the only ones with dysfunctional families. "My Neighbors the Yamadas" is an animated film that follows the life of one family living in a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. They fight, lose their 6-year-old daughter in a shopping mall, eat their dinner in front of a TV set, ignore each other, have a preteen boy who looks at dirty magazines and a grandma who talks to caterpillars.

Wolves mix rock, electronica in album

Finally, a pretentious art rock band you can sink your teeth into. We Are Wolves sounds like every other garage band to emerge from the woodwork the last few years, at least during a perfunctory first listen. But they manage to pull a few interesting musical tricks out of what are surely very tight sleeves.
