COLUMN: Gaining trust of Iraqis not easy
March 25by Sean Misko Daily Collegian (Pennsylvania State U.) (U-WIRE) UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Far from the scripted “shock and awe” promised by military planners, the first official shots of the U.S.-led war with Iraq were brief and took many experts by surprise.
COLUMN: Media labels war protesters
March 25by Jen Kosakowski Daily Targum (Rutgers U.) (U-WIRE) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — It has become increasingly obvious to me in recent weeks that there has been a surge in writings that vilify and invalidate the anti-war activist. There has never been much tolerance for dissent in this nation, but the proliferation and escalation of such rhetoric and its attempts to disengage anti-war activists should be questioned.

Women face biggest challenge yet
Lee Cornell | March 24While most UNM students were catching up on much needed rest or just partying until the break of dawn this spring break, the Lobo women's basketball team was very busy. UNM clinched an automatic birth to NCAA tournament with its three-game sweep of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

Inexperience hurts UNM golf team
Jeff Proctor | March 24For the second straight outing, the UNM men's golf team struggled against a strong field -- this time at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, March 16-17. COLUMN: 'Freedom' fries not enough
March 24by Dustin Habermann Daily Lobo Guest Columnist In response to France's betrayal of our war on Iraq, legislation has come up to change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries." In my humble opinion, this is just what our country needs to help boost morale for the war.
COLUMN: World anti-war, not anti-American
March 24by Holly Wray The Maneater (U. Missouri) 03/21/2003 (U-WIRE) ALICANTE, Spain -- I've never been proud to be an American. But this is the first time I've ever consciously tried to hide my nationality. In the past few weeks, when I've spoken in broken Spanish to professors at my Spanish university in Alicante, to librarians when I checked out books, to train station employees when I bought tickets for weekend trips, I spoke quickly and quietly, trying to conceal my American accent.
UNM Lobos need more of Moore if they want to win
Kenn Rodriguez | March 24For a moment late Saturday night, UNM's Mandi Moore looked forlorn. Sitting on the dais at The Pit's interview room after the Lobos' 91-85 overtime victory over the University of Miami, a look of pain passed over the sophomore point guard's face as teammate Chelsea Grear talked about the first half of the game.
War, protests march on
March 24The last week has not only seen a flurry of activity among U.S. soldiers overseas, but also among community members who are protesting the ongoing war in Iraq. Since the war began Wednesday, and for a long time before it started, there have been community-wide protests in Albuquerque, the majority of them occurring right along the campus border.
LETTER: Foreign students should get counseling during Iraq war
March 24Editor, I beg every reader to take a minute and imagine how the violence and hostilities in Iraq might feel in the heart of an international student at UNM. Contrary to accepted prejudice, not all of them are terrorists. Indeed, what I have witnessed from them during 25 years is fascination and relief at finally living in such a free society.
LETTER: UNM must foster all views
March 24To the UNM community: As historic events unfold in Iraq and around the world, the University of New Mexico community will strive to deal constructively with the breadth, depth and consequences of recent and breaking developments. As individuals within the UNM community -- students, faculty, staff -- each of us will deal with our own feelings about the situation.

The anti-war messages, including "War is murder;" "Bush is a terrorist;" and "No war," were spray painted onto the walls of the Navy and Air Force ROTC buildings, the north wall of the Fine Arts Building and along the south wall of the city reservoir on South Redondo Drive sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
