School of Management's new building officially opens

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anderson School of Management’s new building drew a large crowd on May 11 and featured appearances from several senior faculty members. Speakers at the event commended the Anderson School’s accomplishments. At the event was the dean of Anderson School of Management Craig White.

Softball: Lobos swept by Boise State in final season series

The University of New Mexico softball team was swept in its final series of the season by the Boise State Broncos, who secured the Mountain West title and a place in the NCAA regionals with the win in the first half of Saturday’s doubleheader. Game One The Broncos wasted no time jumping on the Lobos in the first game of the series on Thursday, racking up eight runs in the first inning.

Softball: Skylar Jenkins commits to UNM

The University of New Mexico softball program added its fifth recruit of the 2019 class last week with the commitment of Skylar Jenkins, an outfielder from Buford High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Jenkins hit .415 during her senior season en route to helping her team win its 10th consecutive state championship.

There have been 21 years of hugs, tears, laughter and love. 12 years of soccer practices. Three years of care packages and phone calls to make up for the missed Thanksgiving’s and birthdays. It’s been four years since the last time I had the chance to wish you a happy Mother’s Day in person.

Alumni dress in gold to celebrate 50 years

The University of New Mexico class of 1968 reunited this weekend to celebrate 50 years since their graduation. Alumni came from all over to take part in the “golden graduation.” On Friday, the golden graduates had the chance to have refreshments and get fitted for their gold cap and gowns. They also received several gifts and memorabilia. The golden graduates also went on a campus tour to see all of the changes and additions to UNM. Many departments, such as the College of Education and the College of Engineering, had their own receptions or luncheons to honor their golden graduates on Friday.

Fans flock to Free Comic Book Day celebration

All across the world, comic book stores and comic book fans gathered on Saturday for the annual Free Comic Book Day celebration. The comic book store on Nob Hill, Astro-Zombies, participated too. “It's kind of a way to spark an interest with readers that aren't necessarily comic fans as well as for shops to give back to people that allow them to have the coolest job in the world,” said Mike D'Elia, the owner of Astro-Zombies. “This is what I get to do for a living, so the least we can do is put on a crazy event like this every year and do something that brings the whole comic book community together.”

Kathleen Becker was announced as the new CEO of the University of New Mexico Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. The decision was made by chancellor of the Health Sciences Center Dr. Paul Roth and a selection committee

Department's of Athletics breaks down sports' budget

The University of New Mexico’s Department of Athletics jointly presented a line-by-line budget breakdown by sport with President Stokes’ appointed budget team to the Board of Regents Finance and Facilities Committee meeting Tuesday afternoon. The meeting served as a preview this Friday’s UNM Board of Regents meeting, where the fiscal year 2018-2019 budget will be up for approval and sent to the New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED).

UNM hosts free speech event

The University of New Mexico hosted a free speech event titled “Challenges, Threats and Dilemmas of Free Speech in the Age of Trump.” The event highlighted the importance of freedom speech and the caveats individuals face in the current political climate. This event was the first in a series of events that will discuss issues in free speech. According to Pete Simonson, executive director of the New Mexico American Civil Liberties Union, his is one of the only organizations that continuously protects the right to freedom speech.

UNMH comes closer to selecting new CEO

The University of New Mexico Hospital has reached the final stages of selecting a new CEO. Three finalists were named in the search for CEO — Kate Becker, Deborah McGrew and Herbert Buchanan. Each candidate held a town hall on UNM North Campus during the month of April, during which they described their plans for UNM Hospital and answered questions from hospital employees.

Celebration of Life held for late UNM professor

The departments of Language, Literacy & Sociocultural Studies and Linguistics at the University of New Mexico held their first of two celebrations in the honor of Regents’ Professor Emerita Veronka (Vera) John-Steiner on April 28 in the Rotunda at the UNM Science & Technology Park. John-Steiner taught for 40 years at the University. She was an internationally recognized scholar, author and teacher, who passed away on December 6, 2017.

Regents Committee approves three new degree programs at UNM

The University of New Mexico Board of Regents Academic/Student Affairs & Research Committee unanimously voted to add three new degree programs to the UNM curriculum. The new additions include a doctorate in geography, and an master’s and doctorate in Chicana and Chicano studies. The latter two degrees only recently passed through the faculty senate with a notable amount of support.

Graduation Issue: Aleja Allen pursues Irish studies

Aleja Allen will be graduating on May 12 with a master’s degree in Modern European History from the University of New Mexico. Allen’s graduate education focused on Irish studies, particularly comparing Derry, Northern Ireland and the Irish community in South Boston in the Civil Rights Era. According to Allen, her passion for history began as a child. Allen grew up as a third generation New Mexican in Pie Town, New Mexico. She had academically debilitating dyslexia and had to be home-schooled because she could not read by the 3rd grade. However, with the help of her mother and grandmother, she began to read

UNM recognizes most outstanding teachers of 2018

The 2018 Teaching Excellence Awards were presented to faculty on May 3, in the Student Union Building Ballroom to recognize those who went above and beyond in educating students at the University of New Mexico. The awards were put on by the Center for Teaching and Learning, Faculty Senate for Teaching Enhancement Committee, UNM Graduate Studies and the New Mexico Graduates of Color.

Softball: Lobos win home finale

The New Mexico softball team sent its seniors out the way that anyone would want to end their final home game; with a win. Krissy Fortner and Chelsea Johnson led the charge and finished off San Diego State 4-1 for the Lobos first Mountain West series victory of the season. Johnson went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, including a two-run insurance home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. “It was a really important weekend coming into this, I knew that, but I just wanted to go out with a bang and help my team in anyway possible,” Johnson said. “I didn’t care how I got a hit, I didn’t care what it looked like as long as I got on base and moved runners and did my job, I was going to help my team out.”

Letter: For Whom The Nobel Tolls?

Editor, Sure, things don't exist in international relations, but we seem to be witnessing an impending settlement of the nearly 70-year-old Korean War. Kim Jong-un recently became the first ruler of North Korea to officially visit the South, where he conferred with president Moon Jae-in. Denuclearization and a peace treaty look like real possibilities. Kim is also working out plans for a summit with US president Donald Trump.

Graduation Issue: UNM provides student with international experience

Amelia Fasting, a soon-to-be graduate with a dual bachelor’s in political science and international studies, has spent her last two years of college studying at the University of New Mexico. Fasting spent her freshman and sophomore year at Louisiana Tech University, and later transferred to UNM to finish her last years of school. Coming from a military family, Fasting has lived in a variety of places, but said she decided that New Mexico was where she resonated most with home.
