Federal government gives grant for economic development

The University of New Mexico’s organization for Supporting Technology Transfer and Catalyzing Economic Development (STC.UNM) has received a five-year grant from the federal U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) under its University Center Economic Development Program to foster economic development in the region. EDA is a bureau within the U.S. Department of Commerce. EDA's University Center Economic Development Program makes the resources of universities available to the economically developing community. Using the grant awarded, STC.UNM will establish a university center to promote economic growth in the region. According to the EDA’s Website, the U.S. Department of Commerce has invested $2.5 million to strengthen innovative and economic growth initiatives. Colleges and universities in 13 states have been awarded funding through economic development competition.

College of Education hosts research showcase

The University of New Mexico Center for Collaborative Research & Community Engagement (CCRCE) in the College of Education (COE) organized a research showcase in Travelstead Hall on Friday Sept. 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event was hosted by the Alumni Relations Office and College of Education. CCRCE is a new center that was officially given the stamp of approval on Feb. 1 of this year. The center is still under development. Its advisory board consists of different members, including five faculty members from different departments of the COE, an indigenous tribal member, one representative from non-profit organizations and one representative from the Albuquerque Public School district.

SHAC offers free flu shots

The University of New Mexico Student Health and Counseling is offering its annual Take One for Raymond flu shot clinic on Oct. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Building Atrium. Flu shots are free and for anyone who is 18 years or older. SHAC's Take One for Raymond flu shot event is in memory of UNM student Raymond Plotkin, who passed away from the H1N1 virus in 2009. The initiative was established by Plotkin's parents to encourage everyone to get their seasonal flu shots. His parents also created a scholarship program in his memory.

UNM professor edits book on grandparenting

The University of New Mexico’s Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies department chair, professor Ziarat Hossain, co-edited a book with professor David Shwalb from Southern Utah University called “Grandparents in Cultural Context” and has recently been published. The book integrates new ideas into previously established concepts surrounding grandparenthood. It includes authors from 15 countries and covers grandparenting in 12 diverse societies across four continents: North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

UNM Press gift hundreds of books to tribal libraries

The Center for Regional Studies (CRS) and UNM Press at the University of New Mexico have gifted 850 books to 25 underfunded public and tribal libraries in New Mexico, with each library receiving 34 books. The books focus on the history, landscape and the communities of the region. This collaborative project began in 2009 in an effort to promote the relationship between the community and UNM.

Center dedicated to ending racial disparities changes names

The ten-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant for the University of New Mexico’s Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy has ended and the Center is about to complete the process of transition by the end of July to its new enterprise — the UNM Center for Social Policy. The primary mission of the RWJF Center for Health Policy at UNM was to identify, train and graduate doctorate students primarily of color that focus on racial and ethnic health disparities.

Celebration of Life held for late UNM professor

The departments of Language, Literacy & Sociocultural Studies and Linguistics at the University of New Mexico held their first of two celebrations in the honor of Regents’ Professor Emerita Veronka (Vera) John-Steiner on April 28 in the Rotunda at the UNM Science & Technology Park. John-Steiner taught for 40 years at the University. She was an internationally recognized scholar, author and teacher, who passed away on December 6, 2017.

Green Issue — Student Family Housing provides community garden for residents

There are 70 plots in the two gardens at Student Family Housing at the University of New Mexico. And for Denise Mitchell, “since their opening in late 80s, early 90s, the gardens have been one of the beautiful spots of their kind at the housing complex.” Mitchell, the area coordinator for the SFH, said the idea began when wives of two students planted in kimchi pots.

Ethnic studies hope to expand their curricula

Ethnic departments across the University of New Mexico are advocating for change, with strong support from all departments. Chicana and Chicano Studies and Native American Studies are looking to add a master’s and doctorate degree to their programs. Africana Studies is currently looking to earn departmental status, but hopes to add a master’s and doctorate degree to their program in the future as well.
