Album Spotlight: 'Ty Segall' by Ty Segall

On his second album, the California-based garage rock musician Ty Segall puts together an album that serves less as a venture into new territory than as a comprehensive culmination of his music to this point, jumping genres at the drop of a hat. I don’t know how Segall has time to sleep. He spends so much time recording and putting out album after album under the Ty Segall name and touring said music, in addition to his vast collection of side projects and bands. He is without a doubt among indie rock’s most prolific songwriters.

NM House debates sexual assault bill

A bill that would have required UNM and other schools in the state to provide evidence-based sexual assault training to every student stalled in the House Judiciary Committee with a “do pass” recommendation. House Bill 339, sponsored by New Mexico Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero, D-NM, also would have required post-secondary institutions to provide easy access to training material on university websites. UNM expressed concerns over several provisions of the bill.

Baseball: UNM swept in Fullerton, California, have now lost five straight

New Mexico baseball wrapped up a three-game series against Cal State Fullerton, and each game ended the same way—with the Lobos on the wrong end of a one-run game. The Lobos (11-8, 6-0 MW), dropped all three games to the Titans, extending their overall losing streak to five on the season—the most recent loss, a pitcher’s duel that favored Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, 1-0. In spite of the losses, head coach Ray Birmingham seemed pleased with the way his team competed against the No. 7 team in the country.

Beach Volleyball: Lobos split weekend at Stetson Beach Invite

The New Mexico beach volleyball team evened its performance at Stetson Beach Invite with a pair of wins and one defeat on Saturday in Tavares, Florida. The Lobos (6-8) went 3-3 overall over the weekend, dominating some of their opponents for falling to the nationally ranked ones. New Mexico dominated Jacksonville State (2-14) with a 5-0 sweep in its first match on Saturday. Then, New Mexico challenged tournament host No. 14 (DiG)/No. 12 (AVCA) Stetson (5-8), but fell 4-1. Though the team was able to rebound to end its east coast journey with a 5-0 victory over Lincoln Memorial (0-3).

Baseball: Lobos drop another one-run decision, losing 5-4 to CS Fullerton

A seventh inning lead for the University of New Mexico wasn't enough to stop Cal State Fullerton from pushing its way back into the game. After the Lobos (11-7, 6-0 MW) acquired a 4-2 lead, the Titans rallied its way back to a win on Saturday evening at Goodwin Field, 5-4, marking the second straight game in as many days that UNM lost to the opponent by a single run. Head coach Ray Birmingham said the players weren’t necessarily to blame for the loss, adding that some difficult fielding conditions played a role as well.

Baseball: Lobos lose third straight game, falling 2-1 to Cal State Fullerton

Pitching was the prowess in Friday evening’s game between the University of New Mexico and Cal State Fullerton. But, despite a strong effort by the Lobos, they fell to the Titans, 2-1, at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. Despite another loss on the ledger, head coach Ray Birmingham said he was pleased with his team’s performance, especially that of his starting pitcher Tyler Stevens and his team’s best hitter Luis Gonzalez. “That was a very competitive college baseball game,” Birmingham said in a press release.

Beach Volleyball: Lobos drop heartbreakers to Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, but win Morehead State

Struggling with close matches, the Lobo beach volleyball team could not pull out two tight games against nationally ranked teams, finishing its debut on the east coast with a sweep over Morehead State. “We lost two heartbreakers today,” New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson said in a release. “They were both matches we could have won, but we just didn’t stay in the moment.” The only win of the Lobos (4-7) on Friday at the Stetson Beach Invitational in Tavares, Florida came from a 5-0 sweep against Morehead State (0-3).

Beach Volleyball: Lobos get another shot to win against top-ranked teams in Florida

The Lobo beach volleyball team will travel to Tavares, Florida to compete in the Stetson Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday. New Mexico (3-5) one just one of its three matches last week, but made some strides in closing the gap against a pair of nationally-ranked teams on Sunday. The Lobos were narrowly defeated 3-2 against Arizona State and fell to Arizona by a score of 4-1 on Sunday. In the newest DiG Magazine poll, the Lobos were ranked 22nd, as well as 23rd in the AVCA poll.

Baseball: Lobos suffer second consecutive shutout loss to Oklahoma State

It would be safe to say that the bats for New Mexico bats were quiet against Oklahoma State as the team suffered another loss on Wednesday afternoon. New Mexico (11-5, 6-0 MW) mustered just three hits in the second of a two-game series, losing a second consecutive game to the Oklahoma State as the Cowboys improved to 11-6 on the season. The Cowboys pounded out 16 hits and lit up the scoreboard, in a lopsided 13-0 victory at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Men’s Tennis: Lobos back on track after strong 5-2 home win

The Lobo men’s tennis team was desperate for a win after dropping its last four decisions and got one by grinding out a hard-fought match at home on Tuesday over Northern Arizona. After losing to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, the Lobos were desperate for a victory. Before the Mountain-Pacific Invitational Tournament in California, the Lobos were in fine form, having won five matches in a row. But the Lobos played a handful of matches in California, though one would up being canceled. New Mexico lost both matches in the tournament and the California curse continued as it lost to UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara as well.

For the past 14 years, New Mexico tried an experiment – we cut personal and corporate income taxes to see if jobs would flow into the state. The experiment failed. Jobs and people left the state. Revenues tumbled. Schools, public safety and infrastructure were decimated. And the tax burden rose sharply on lower and middle class wage earners.

Study: New Mexico has work to do with woman-friendliness

In the midst of Women’s History Month, WalletHub began ranking how women fare in each state, and New Mexico came in at 43rd — ninth worst in the nation. The study compared each state and Washington D.C. across 19 metrics. Area in which New Mexico is notably poor: unemployment rate for women, share of women in poverty, high school dropout rate for women, female uninsured rate, quality of women’s hospitals and women’s preventive healthcare. Associate history professor Cathleen Cahill said the statistics are not surprising, due to the state’s extensive history of a “rural population, poverty and isolation, resulting in difficulties for women and children."

Women's Tennis: Lobo notch first double point of season, but fall in home opener

The Lobo women’s tennis team broke through to win its first doubles point of the season in the home opener, but it wasn’t enough as Minnesota came from behind to ruin the homecoming. New Mexico (1-10) opened the spring season playing 10 straight matches on the road, but came away with just one team victory despite getting close several times. The team returned to host Minnesota (9-4) and hoped to continue its dominance at home, where UNM went undefeated last season.

Women's Basketball: Team announces three players set to part ways with Lobo basketball

Three Lobo women's basketball players have apparently played their last game in the cherry and silver, with the trio expected to transfer prior to the start of next season. A release named junior guard Jayda Bovero and freshmen Brittany Panetti and Hannah Sjerven as the student-athletes that will be leaving the program. Panetti and Sjerven were used sparingly, with both players averaging well under 10 minutes of playing time per game. Though it was a small sample size, Panetti scored 21 points in just 41 minutes of playing time, going 7-of-9 from the floor and securing 10 rebounds. But the 6’1” forward only played in eight games during the season, averaging just over five minutes per game. Head coach Mike Bradbury said Panetti made the decision to transfer to a place where she might see more playing team and have a bigger role on the team.

Baseball: UNM gets multiple MW Player of the Week prior to facing Oklahoma State

The Lobo baseball team took two coveted Mountain West accolades after sweeping San Jose State over the weekend. Senior first baseman Jack Zoellner took home Mountain West Player of the Week – his second this season—and junior Tyler Stevens joined his teammate earning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors. Zoellner played a big part in the Lobo offense during a game in El Paso, Texas against New Mexico State as well as their three-game series sweep at home against San Jose State over the weekend. The Lobo first baseman hit a healthy .529 during the four-game stretch, racking up three doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and eight RBI.

Beach Volleyball: Lobos fall to both Arizona State and Arizona in Sun Devil Challenge

The New Mexico volleyball team continued to show improvement against some of the top programs in the nation, but could not pull out a victory. The Lobos (3-5) lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Arizona State Sun Devils (3-2), and fell later in the day by a score of 4-1 to the Arizona Wildcats (3-2) in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday. “We’re still getting better with each match,” head coach Jeff Nelson said in a release. “It was an exciting day...The level was really high.”

Men’s Soccer: Lawrence double gives UNM first win of the 2017 spring season

The Lobo’s spring season kicked off last week in dramatic fashion, with UNM losing 2-1 in overtime to Southern Methodist University. While the first game may not have gone the way the Lobos intended, the spring season is less about the results and more about player development and experience. Young players get a chance to adapt and exhibit their abilities on the field. "Spring games are a great opportunity for our young players to test themselves in preparation for the fall,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said in a release.

Baseball: Lobos perfect in MW play after completing a three-game sweep of San Jose State

The Lobo baseball team may have racked up fewer hits than San Jose State on Sunday afternoon, but they were still able to scrounge up a win. New Mexico took home an 8-3 victory in its final chapter of a three-game series with the San Jose State Spartans, completing the sweep to improve its record to 11-3 overall and an unblemished 6-0 in the Mountain West. Meanwhile, after losing three straight to the Lobos, the Spartans have dropped to 6-8 on the season with a 2-4 record in conference play. UNM was uncharacteristically outhit in the game, as the Spartan bats put plenty of balls in play. But they weren't able to translate those hits into runs, scoring just three times on 15 hits for the game.

Men's Soccer: Former Lobo Chris Wehan goes pro, signing with Reno 1868 FC

Former Lobo Chris Wehan recently became the third member of the 2016 UNM men’s soccer squad to be inked to a professional contract. Reno 1868 FC announced on Wednesday that the team offered Wehan a professional contract, as the UNM alum moves into the next level in his soccer career.
