Letter: Yiannopoulos' rhetoric violates academic codes of conduct

Editor, In regards to the impending visit of Milo Yiannopoulos, poster boy of the alt-right and editor for the website Breitbart, I implore the UNM faculty, as well as the student body, to consider the implications and potential consequences of his visit. I assume that there is already concern on behalf of safety, otherwise they would not have been prepared to staff it so heavily with security. To whom does this concern vest itself in?

Letter: Inviting Yiannopoulos endangers students

Editor, I write to you to inform you that bringing Milo Yiannopoulos to the UNM campus not only breaks UNM policy against harassment, but also puts fellow students in danger. According to UNM’s policy, it “forbids unlawful discrimination and/or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, ancestry, spousal affiliation, medical condition, or veteran status” (Administrative Policy 2720 & Regent’s Policy Manual Section 2.3).

Track and field: Team hoping to put momentum from opener into Team Invite

26 top-10 finishes by the New Mexico track and field team made for an impressive start to the season, but nowhere near the squad’s ultimate goal as the season continues to heat up. “Our feet are ready to go, and let people see some improvements this weekend,” head coach Joe Franklin said. The Lobos will host the New Mexico Team Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, eyeing some more sterling performances at second home meet.

Editor, I am a parent to a current UNM student and I'm concerned about the recent events that took place on January 20th at the University of Washington. Mr. Yiannopoulos was having a speaking event at their university, there was a protest at his speaking event and a shooting took place at the event. A person was shot at this event and was critically injured; I'm not aware of his/her current condition but I am concerned about what may occur at the speaking event that is taking place Friday at the University of New Mexico.

Why do families watch brutal boxing and mixed martial arts of man against man and woman against woman bruising, bloodying and brain injuring each other? Why would any adult watch that evil crap?

Editor, It has come to my concern that Milo Yiannopoulos is actually coming to campus on Friday to speak. From what I understand from UNM's policy concerning speakers coming to campus is that they have to have an educational purpose. I do not consider Yiannopoulos speaking at UNM to be educational, rather discriminatory toward marginalized groups on campus such as LGBTQ members, women, Muslims and African Americans.

With a budget crisis confronting the New Mexico Legislature, some legislators plan to float a controversial idea gaining momentum across the nation: Legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana, or cannabis. Adult recreational use is now allowed in eight states plus the District of Columbia, and more than 25 already authorize it for medicinal purposes. And in 2016, after three years of being bogged down in Senate committees, an effort to legalize recreational use in New Mexico made it to the Senate floor for a vote.

Label: Glassnote (Neo Soul) (48:57) Highlights: "Me and Your Momma," "Redbone," "Have Some Love," "Terrified" As much as I yearned for Gambino to come back this year with some swiggity rhymes over some swooty beats, I can't really complain with what we got. Let's dispel this notion once and for all that Childish Gambino doesn't know what he's doing. He knows exactly what he's doing! This is a complete 180-degree stylistic change from the dude, which would be cause for alarm if he didn't know how to do, just, so many things. As the album art can attest, this whole record is essentially Funkadelic.

Advancing Women in Science group asks UNM to be accountable with Yiannopoulos visit

Another UNM student organization has sent a letter to UNM administrators expressing concern over Milo Yiannopoulos’s speaking engagement on campus this Friday. Advancing Women in Science wrote the letter — which was signed by 300 other students and other University community members — on Monday morning. “One of our goals is to take action against sexism on campus,” AWS Co-President Andrea Chavez said. “We wrote this letter to raise our concerns about the importance of the University’s role in providing an intellectual space for students to be exposed to and to engage in key controversial debates of our time. It is the responsibility of the University to ensure that speakers — and the groups that bring them — are not engaging in hate speech or harassment, endangering or marginalizing students, or stifling productive discussion.”

Governor nominates pair of new regents

Governor Susana Martinez has nominated two appointees with business backgrounds to the UNM Board of Regents, pending Senate committee approval. Following confirmation, Don Tripp and John Ryan – both Republicans – would replace current Regents Jack Fortner and Bradley Hosmer. The transition would spell an end of an era of sorts for the board, as Fortner has served in the seat since 1998, having been appointed to successive terms by three different governors. According to a UNM release, Tripp graduated from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He has served in the state legislature, and was speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017, according to the release.

Women's Basketball: Keys to beating Utah State

The Lobo women's basketball will travel to Logan, Utah Wednesday night to face off against Utah State for the second time this season. The Lobos (9-9, 5-3 MW) enter Wednesday’s contest with the same overall number of wins as their opponent (nine), but UNM sports the better conference record (9-9, 2-5 MW).The Lobos are also coming off of a loss at Wyoming, while Utah State is looking to rebound after a loss at Colorado State. The last time New Mexico and Utah State faced off was near the beginning of the calendar year on Jan. 4 — a 78-67 victory that the Lobos nabbed late at WisePies Arena.

Acting UNM Prez: Banning Milo would detract from role of the university

In response to ongoing pressure by student groups and local activist organizations looking to “shut down” the Friday visit by Milo Yiannopoulos, interim UNM President Chaouki Abdallah offered his two cents in his weekly University-wide communique, explaining in the process why he is not electing to cancel the event. Abdallah doesn’t mince words when discussing Yiannopoulos’ rhetoric in the emailed message. Without referring to him by name – but instead “controversial speaker” – Abdallah suggests that the conservative Breitbart writer will distribute messages that contrast the University’s mission. “He will use the platform to personally denigrate specific members of our campus, to sow division and to attack many values that we hold dear,” he wrote.

January 20th was the day that many feared. It was at 11:30 a.m., on Pennsylvania Ave, in the rain that Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States. Some cheered, some cried, others expressed smug superiority and some contorted with anguish. The 2017 Inauguration was a historic day, regardless of which side you’re on. Even before President Trump put his hand on the bible protests, resistance and rage gripped the streets of D.C., and so began the wave of protests and demonstrations that would sweep the nation and the globe from D.C. to Los Angeles, to Berlin, Germany and Sydney, Australia.

Men's Basketball: Streaking Lobos seeks revenge against team trending the other way

Two weeks ago the Lobos were mired in the middle of a three-game losing stretch and on Tuesday, New Mexico will get a shot at redemption as it plays host to the team that started that streak. The Utah State Aggies hosted the Lobos on Jan. 4 and handed them a 79-75 loss. UNM head coach Craig Neal and the team have moved on from that loss, but recognize the opponents are still a threat. “I thought we played very well there the first time,” Neal said. “I like their team, they have a very really good player in (freshman) Koby McEwen,, he is a really good point guard. They’ve changed their lineup a little bit. Jalen Moore could be a first-team all-league player.”

UNM partners with Air Force to help STEM students

UNM and the Air Force Research Laboratory are working together to encourage STEM students to pursue internships and plan for careers. The UNM and AFRL mentoring program, which began in fall 2015, is accepting applications for this semester until January 30th. Tara Hackel, who helped create the program, said it pairs scientists who work at AFRL with UNM students to support students with an interest in STEM — the fields of science, technology, engineering and math — to help scientists build their leadership skills. The program was created by the STEM Collaborative Center and AFRL to build a pathway for students interested in internships at the Air Force labs, Hackel said. “I’m coming from an engineering background, and being one of the few women in my field and a first year student it was really hard to find mentors that I could relate to that understood what I was going through,” she said.

Women’s Soccer: Lynch eyes strong final season as a Lobo

To say that junior Albuquerque native Claire Lynch has had a successful UNM soccer career would be an understatement, and the best could be yet to come as she prepares for her final collegiate season. In her freshman season for the Lobos, she made 15 appearances and was the team’s top scorer with four goals. Impressively, three of those four goals were game winners, two of which came against Boise State. As a sophomore, Lynch’s role began increasing, making 20 appearances and 18 starts. She scored another game-winning goal against Colorado College on Oct. 23, 2015 and registered five goals for the season. Lynch increased her scoring total to eight goals this past season, including a superb long-ranged shot against the Nevada Wolfpack last Oct. 7.

Letter: Student groups show hypocrisy by threatening Milo with violence

Editor, Leftist student groups at the University of New Mexico claim that Milo Yiannopoulos’ event next Friday will lead to “physical violence and expand bias against” them in a letter to University administration, the Daily Lobo reported. Yiannopoulos, the provocative Breitbart editor, flamboyantly criticizes political correctness, liberal politics and culture at college campuses across the United States for his “Dangerous Faggot Tour.” He also fervently defends free speech and explains how conservatives face censorship from fellow citizens, universities and the media.
