Album Review: Local Natives delivers emotion-laden LP

Alternative rock quintet Local Natives released their third full length LP, “Sunlit Youth,” earlier this month to an eager fan base, following up their 2013 release “Hummingbird” which was a driving sophomore endeavor that established the group's artistry within the realm of indie music. On “Sunlit Youth” we are given a dozen colorful, dream-laced indie pop anthems that can be danced or cried to, depending on how your day went. It’s a solid record but doesn’t deliver in a few areas in which I thought Local Natives’ had outdone themselves in previous releases.

Column: The Millenial vote is more important than ever

While a candidate will commonly urge voters to vote consistently in almost every election and state — that every individual vote counts this year — they would have a point. 18 to 35 is the age range for the Millennial Generation and, for the first time, the entire generation will have the opportunity to vote, making up to roughly 31 percent of the electorate, close to equaling Baby Boomer generation, which also makes up roughly 31 percent.

Historic moment for student publication

For the first time, a non-UNM student has become a part of Scribendi, the annual literary and arts magazine produced by the UNM Honors College. As part of the Western Regional Honors Council National Student Exchange, Southern Oregon University student Allie Sipe is the magazine’s first visiting staff member.

Gov. Martinez unveils "Route to 66" Plan

Governor Susana Martinez on Friday unveiled a new long-term plan which envisions 66 percent of working-age New Mexicans having college degrees by 2030. The curtain on the initiative, coined “Route to 66,” was pulled back during Martinez’s 2nd Annual Higher Education Summit on Friday at Embassy Suites. The idea was conceived at a meeting between the governor’s office and higher-ed stakeholders last month, she said.

Women's Soccer: Lobos open Mountain West play with winless weekend.

Sometimes following the gameplan and outplaying an opponent doesn’t translate into a victory. Occasionally a team just needs to get a break. New Mexico could manage to catch whatever it needed in a 2-1 loss to Air Force on Sunday afternoon.

Volleyball: New Mexico loses in 5 sets to Boise State, drops to 1-1 in MW play

The opportunity was there, but a sluggish start and a stumble at the finish cost UNM a perfect start to the Mountain West. New Mexico’s start to what would become a 3-2 loss to Boise State on Saturday was not how head coach Jeff Nelson drew it up in the pregame, and it took the Lobos an entire game to get going.

Women's Soccer: Lack of energy out of the gate leads to loss in MW opener

New Mexico’s Mountain West season started off with a bang. Unfortunately for the Lobos, it wasn’t in their favor. It took all but 15 seconds for Colorado College’s freshman Madeline Stesney to find the back of UNM’s net off of a cross from sophomore forward Clara Richter.

UNM Athletics Director appointed to NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament selection committee

Although college basketball season has yet to begin, the University of New Mexico officially has a representative for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for 2016-17. The NCAA announced on Thursday morning that Paul Krebs, vice president for athletics at UNM, has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. Krebs will be one of only 10 members chosen from universities across the nation.

UNM president to give up seat after contract expires next May

UNM President Bob Frank will not seek a second term with the University after his contract expires on May 31, 2017, he announced on Tuesday afternoon via a University press release. Frank, the 21st president of the University, has been with UNM since 2012.

The Lobos certainly weren’t in midseason conference form, but the squad didn’t have to be. New Mexico came out in a 3-0 sweep over Air Force on Thursday night, while team captain Julia Warren watched from the bench with a big black brace on her right knee.

UNM administration discusses budget situation in town hall

In a town hall session on Thursday, UNM President Bob Frank said the decision budgets cuts and the recent decision to implement a hiring freeze will help cover the University’s shortages in the next fiscal year. Main Campus will remain on a hiring freeze for six months and closely evaluate the need for all vacant noncritical positions within the university, Frank said in a recent University-wide e-mail.

Uber to provide a lift for Lobo sports fans

UNM Athletics is partnering with the ride service Uber to safely transport students to and from games. “We believe this provides another alternative for students to attend the game and get home safely. It is convenient in that no parking pass is needed — the drop off/pick up is just north of University Stadium,” Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations Brad Hutchins said.

UNM students help pave the path to freedom for Guantanamo inmate

Four UNM students helped a pair of local lawyers secure a release recommendation for a Guantanamo Bay detainee, getting some work in for class in the process. Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was detained in 2002 for his alleged association with al-Qaeda in the early ‘90s, authored the bestselling memoir “Guantanamo Diary.” Despite his almost 14-year detainment, he was never charged.

Lobos running back to be disciplined by UNM following reports of January arrest in Dallas

New Mexico running back Teriyon Gipson can’t outrun a past incident which has been brought to the spotlight, and could continue to have an effect both on and off the field. Multiple reports confirm Gipson was arrested in January while in Dallas on a pair of misdemeanor charges for marijuana possession and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Instead of just getting all high and mighty and righteously indignant with all these Muslims among us killing everyday citizenry, we must acknowledge that a big reason they are doing so is that by and large we are bombing their mother countries year after year without interruption. UNMPD's hiring process less stringent than APD's

Despite the alleged misconduct by officers during a 2014 UNMPD sexual assault investigation, UNMPD Lieutenant Timothy Stump said there are still a lot of good officers working for the department. Stump said that although the department’s contact info is on the back of every student’s Lobo ID card, many are not aware of what the UNM police department does.

Volleyball: Lobos enter conference play 4th in MW

If New Mexico has taken anything away from non-conference play, it’s that the Mountain West title is wide open and up for grabs. Everyone begins conference play with the same 0-0 record, but there have been some changes on how the Mountain West is stacking up this year. For starters, powerhouse Colorado State (6-5) has already lost more games than the squad lost all last season when the Rams were 26-4 and 18-0 in MW play.

UNM group informs NM teens of opioid dangers

The same week President Barack Obama proclaimed National Prescription Opioid and Heroin Awareness Week, the Daily Lobo confirmed with UNMPD that a student overdosed on fentanyl — a potent synthetic opioid pain medication — in University dorms on June 16. UNMPD Lieutenant Timothy Stump said the overdose resulted in death for the student, and investigators are still working on the case.

Men's Soccer: Lobos to face toughest teams in conference play

It’s a big week for the UNM men’s soccer team. The Lobos, who are now on a riding a 5-game winning streak, are preparing to begin conference play. After last weekend’s 3-1 victory over UC Irvine, the Lobos have more than one reason to start with confidence. Senior forward Niko Hansen was named Player of the Week by College Sports News as a result of the hat trick he recorded against UC Irvine.
