According to a UNM press release, John Fleck has been named director of UNM’s Water Resources Program. Fleck, a professor of practice in water policy and governance in the Department of Economics, has been the Water Resources Program’s writer-in-residence since January 2015, according to the press release.

The University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center has received a nearly $2.4 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to conduct a four-year long bipolar disorder study. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mental illness causing sporadic acute periods of depression and manic according to an HSC press release, and currently around six million Americans are suffering from this condition.
What is your take on a UNM professor coming back to campus to teach classes in the fall after a brief suspension for charges of sexual harassment and discrimination?
Questions abound as to why UNM Anthropology Professor Cristobal Valencia is returning to teaching after being briefly suspended in the spring semester for sexually harassing and discriminating against students. The suspension is outlined in a letter from College of Arts and Sciences Dean Mark Peceny to Valencia at the end of March.
Nursing Schools Almanac recently ranked UNM’s College of Nursing among the very best in the region. Hundreds of nursing schools in the Southwest were ranked by the online publication and, of the schools considered, UNM secured 15th place as the website praised its "innovative education opportunities."

The announcement of the Albuquerque Rapid Transit has had a lasting effect on the value of city building permits within five-eights of a mile stretching along the proposed ART corridor. Following the initial announcement of the new transit line, residential and commercial building permits were valued at a little more than $23,200 between March 1st, 2015 to July 20th, 2015. This summer, permits value at $28,478,182, amounting to an increase of 12 percent.
Tension between two panels at a meeting of the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee on Thursday ended with emotional public criticism of UNM’s policies and procedures in dealing with sexual assault. An alumna memorial project at UNM Hodgin Hall's courtyard resulted in what UNM Regent Tom Clifford called an example of "terrible coordination" between the University's Alumni Association and the Board of Regents. As a result, SFH is advising residents to stay cautious and take precautions to keep their belongings and themselves safe. UNMPD Lt. Tim Stump said the stolen items range from cellphones, laptops and backpacks to anything left in a vehicle in plain sight and, unfortunately, sometimes in an unsecured vehicle.
16-year-old Ludella Awad is bringing light to the tragedies in Syria through her second poetry collection. The collection, "Sad Piano Music in Syria," centers on the escalating crisis, which has led to nearly five million refugees leaving the country.
Laura Gomez, a native New Mexican and former UNM professor, has been promoted to interim dean of the UCLA College Division of Social Sciences. “I’m really excited about it, it’s a big job,” Gomez said. Gomez will be the first woman to head this division at UCLA.

This summer 108 second-year UNM medical students headed out to communities all across New Mexico to gain experience working with physicians serving patients in rural communities. The program started at UNM in 1980 as the Primary Care Curriculum Program, and has since evolved into what is now called the Practical Immersion Experience Program (PIE).
The Albuquerque community has rallied around soccer coach and former UNM athlete Cameron Clarke after he suffered a spinal cord injury in early July. With three children and serious medical expenses to pay, the Clarke family has turned to crowdfunding to offset the cost of treatment and travel expenses so that his family can be with him as he receives care at Craig Hospital in Denver.
