Green Issue: Friedman Recycling aims to clean up Duke City

An old, torn shoe zooms by at 280 feet per minute through a colorful stream of crinkled paper. The shoe tries its best to blend in, but an agile hand catches the infiltrator and dumps it into a bin with other non-paper intruders such as Christmas lights and garden hoses. This kind of excitement is a daily occurrence at Friedman Recycling.

Wolf Fest raises awareness about school mascot

2016 marks the 40th year of the Mexican Gray Wolf’s listing under the Endangered Species Act, according to Defenders of Wildlife New Mexico Outreach Representative Michael Dax. Today, only 97 live in the wild in the United States and only 25 in Mexico. Around 250 live in captivity in both countries, Dax said.

The number 333 is written, underlined and circled, atop the colossal white board in the warehouse, signifying the amount of customers Skarsgard will be delivering to.

Five ways to upcycle

There’s a fine line between being crafty and hoarding junk; that line is called upcycling. The process of upcycling focuses on the “reuse” aspect of the three Rs – with an interesting twist. The online Oxford English Dictionary generally defines upcycle as, “to repurpose, renovate, or improve (an old or unwanted item) to make something more attractive, valuable, etc.”

Green Issue: Green Jeans Farmery going strong

Green Jeans Farmery, the unique plaza made out of repurposed shipping containers featuing a gym, restaurants and a brewery located just off I-40 and Carlisle, is currently still in its first year of operation. Amari Anaya, a vendor at Zeus’ Juice and Nutrition at the complex, said Green Jeans is meant to generate a fun, relaxed environment in which everyone feels welcomed and comfortable, as well as to promote values of community health and betterment.

Baseball: UNM evens series behind work on the hill

Fueled by sound pitching, New Mexico was able to even the series against San Jose State on Saturday afternoon, taking game two 6-2. The Lobos fell in a heartbreaker 9-8 in the opening game, despite tying the game up twice in the late stages of Friday night’s ballgame.

What are the next steps for 160over90's rebranding mission at UNM?

160over90 held photo shoots on campus this week to as the next step in the University’s rebranding initiative, as part of an effort to find what makes UNM tick, and potentially market around that down the road. Walter Tammo, chief creative officer and 160over90, said the photo shoots are being done to have photographic material, or “branded photos,” for the rebranding. “Having a bank of images to work with that fit well into the overarching brand is something of an importance,” he said. “Where you can tap into all different kinds of scenarios, from academic situations to dorm life or student life to athletic portions or events.”

ASUNM to host annual 'Fiestas' event

This weekend Associated Students of UNM Student Special Events (SSE) will be hosting its annual Fiestas, an all-day outdoor concert on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The ASUNM agency puts on event every year to celebrate the home stretch of the semester and give students a chance to relax before heading into finals.

National Poetry Month celebrated with Favorite Poem Project

UNM celebrated the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month on Wednesday with the UNM English Department hosting the third annual Favorite Poem Project reading at Zimmerman Library. The Favorite Poem Project was founded in 1997 by Robert Pinsky, the 39th poet laureate of the U.S. It is dedicated to “celebrating, documenting and encouraging poetry’s role in Americans’ lives,” according to the project's website.

Baseball: New Mexico records blowout for win 24 on the year

After being routed in New Mexico’s first day in California on Tuesday night, the Lobos bounced back with a 12-3 blowout over San Francisco on Wednesday. UNM had a quick start to the contest, as they plated four runs in the first inning followed by another four-spot in the top of the second. Grant Goodman had a very brief day for the Dons, only lasting one-third of an inning while allowing four runs, three of which were earned.



Kyle Biederwolf embraces Justin Cooper after the election results on Wednesday night at the SUB. While Biederwolf won the presidential seat, running mate Cooper lost the vice president position to competitor Cheyenne Feltz during the 2016-2017 ASUNM election.

ASUNM election split evenly between slates

Associated Students of UNM elections results were announced Thursday night, and in rare fashion, members of two slates were evenly represented in the results, including splitting the presidential and vice presidential seats. Kyle Biederwolf, of the Ignite slate, was elected ASUNM president for the upcoming school year, and Cheyenne Feltz of Lobos United vice president by a little over 1,600 voters who took to the polls.

Football: Scrimmage helps piece together squad

The New Mexico football team got its first taste of organized play with a scrimmage last Friday, along with a touch of light rain. Head coach Bob Davie said he was pleased with the turnout, which also marked the fifth annual Spring Coaches Clinic. Davie said the year prior to him taking the position there were about 10 coaches that showed up, but the numbers have grown each year. There were 75 coaches that attended Friday.
