Editorial: It's students' duty to vote in ASUNM elections

With 2016 being a U.S. election year, talk of the presidential race is dominating the national landscape. College campuses especially tend to be a popular hotbed of discussion. Groups lobbying for particular candidates are formed, students volunteer to work in local campaign offices and they register to vote, many for the first time. Forums may be held, debate watch parties scheduled, respectful arguments hashed out late at night while taking a break from homework.

Softball: Lobos play host to No. 23 Fresno State

New Mexico returns home, but will be challenged with a nationally ranked opponent as Fresno State comes into town. After losing a series on the road to the Nevada last weekend, the Lobos will play host to No. 23 Fresno State (24-9-, 6-0 MW) on Friday for the start of a three game home stand.

There is plenty at stake this weekend as New Mexico and Fresno State prepare to do battle for the top spot in the Mountain West. Head coach Ray Birmingham is not shying away from the major implications of this weekend’s three game home-stand against the Bulldogs. “We haven’t played our best baseball yet,” Birmingham said. “We’re waiting for that to click.”

UNMH recognized for LGBTQ equality

UNM Hospitals has been declared one of the 496 leaders in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, in its 2016 Healthcare Equality Index. UNMH was recognized as a leader in LGBTQ equality for the fourth consecutive year. The organization recognized UNMH for meeting non-discrimination and training criteria and showing commitment to “equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients, and their families,” according to a statement.

Tennis: Both squads hit the road against conference opponents

The New Mexico men’s and women’s tennis team hit the road this week, with one squad looking to extend a two-match winning streak and the other to dust themselves off after suffering a two-match losing streak. The men’s team put itself in position to win each of its home matches last weekend, but failed to close things out when given the opportunity.

Letter: Free parking on campus would mean no parking on campus for many

We are writing in response to a letter on March 31st regarding UNM Parking and Transportation Services (PATS). Having worked directly with PATS in the past, we can say that they are some of the kindest people you will ever meet. Their primary mission is to serve the students of UNM and they are very clear and enthusiastic about that in any conversation you have with them. Because of this, we think it is only fair to clear up some misconceptions that are widely held all over campus.

Fencing Club offers a unique pastime for novices and experts alike

Fencing offers its practitioners physical exercise and teaches them the beautiful form of swordplay, but the social culture and fun that comes with it is what keeps UNM Fencing Club members coming back. Fencing is a unique hobby that is available to UNM students through the Fencing Club, whose aim is to create a fun, social environment where students can try fencing or improve on it while going to school.

Long-running UNM magazine loses funding

Scribendi, a nonprofit, annual magazine of creative works developed by undergraduate honors students since 1986 has been officially defunded by Associated Students of the UNM after it requested money from this spring’s ASUNM budget. The amount of funding requested by UNM student organizations amounted to more than $1 million. However, less than seven hundred thousand was actually available, resulting in funding reductions for nearly every organization applying.

Letter: Sanders represents a populist campaign of participation

Protagoras was among the first partisans of the so-called social contract, a compromise prohibiting the stronger from injuring the weaker that ratified (in effect) the foundation of democratic government—and strength in the modern age has been principally economic. Wall Street one-percentism is the unambiguous dissolution of the social contract; the Sanders movement represents its surprised restoration.

Sometimes the only history we have on an event or a person is in oral stories. This can come in the form of folk tales, folk songs or even folk poems, among other things. Michele Buchanan, a graduate of UNM’s Los Alamos branch, said she came across one of these oral-only legends when she began to research the origins of her recently acquired instrument, the harp.

Rio Bravo Brewing Company hosts Geographer Tour

Indie bands Geographer and The Crookes are in the midst of their collaborative tour across North America, which brings them to Albuquerque on Wednesday, where they will play at the Rio Bravo Brewing Company. The show will be a midway point in the tour as they continue to travel around America, hitting destinations like New York, Chicago and Nashville in the near future.

Women's Tennis: Lobos remain unscathed in early conference play

New Mexico women’s tennis continued to roll at home, winning a pair of matches over the weekend including a 5-2 triumph on Sunday over Wyoming at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. The Lobos defeated Colorado State Friday 7-0, and began Sunday by jumping out to another early lead. New Mexico pulled out the first two tightly contested doubles matches, to pick up the doubles point and go up 1-0 over the Cowgirls.
