A collaboration between UNM’s Latin American and Iberian Institute with the Tamarind Gallery brought museum curator Omar Diaz Liria to Albuquerque from Cuba for a talk on the evolution and current state of Cuban art on Tuesday night.
It appears UNM has shaken off it’s offensive timidness. New Mexico has struggled putting games away down the stretch, often looking for someone to fill the role to take a big shot. Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez described Wednesday’s 73-70 victory over Utah State as a team victory.
New Mexico’s softball team last year surpassed its preseason poll. After being projected ninth in the Mountain West in the coaches poll, the Lobos finished the season fourth in the standings. According to this year’s poll, the MW coaches expect UNM to match that finish. The poll, released earlier this week, slotted the Lobos fourth heading into the season.
There won’t be any more “Yes!” chants in a WWE ring.
Early on in Hail, Caesar!, the latest effort from Joel and Ethan Coen, Josh Brolin’s character Eddie Mannix describes the work being put into the titular film-within-a-film as passionate. “It’s never been told with this kind of distinction and panache,” he says. That’s how it goes with Hail, Caesar!, part period-centric mystery, part love letter to not just classic Hollywood, but Hollywood of any era. Eddie Mannix is in charge of keeping order at Capital Pictures Studios, and that’s easier said than done, what with his task of having to deal with incompetent actors, unsatisfied directors and vulture-like journalists. He has even more to juggle when A-list movie star and leading man of his film, Baird Whitlock, goes missing.
UNM's Employee Health Promotion is offering a new LIFESTEPS Weight Management Course that benefits eligible staff, faculty and retirees of UNM. Tracy Briggs, EHP supervisor, said LIFESTEPS is offered to the UNM community as a tool for comprehensive weight management. "It is a program that stresses the importance of quality nutrition, physical activity, and the course curriculum stresses teaching behavior modification techniques in a cohort setting which, when integratively implemented, assists with gradual weight loss and an increased healthful lifestyle," she said.
For the first time ever, UNM grad students took part in one of the largest design competitions in the country that included over 60 colleges and universities, with the winner eligible to receive $50,000 in reward money.
Despite the progress New Mexico made in their last four straight victories, the Lobos look to have taken a couple steps back in their two-game road trip. Four days removed from an incorrect call from a referee that led to an overtime loss at San Diego State, UNM struggled in an 80-72 setback at Utah State on Tuesday night. This marked their first ever loss in Logan, Utah.
New Mexico head coach Yvonne Sanchez had a message to her team: Play with no fear. Sanchez said her group came out timid in UNM’s 51-46 loss to Utah State on Saturday. The loss marked the third in a row for New Mexico, the second consecutive at home.
A recent issue of preLaw Magazine graded the University of New Mexico School of Law’s Natural Resources and Environmental Law Programs with an “A” rating.
On Feb. 6, the citizens of Prague gathered at the city center to protest refugee immigration and the EU. Various speakers voiced their opinions at the protest, displaying their contempt with the EU and its efforts to assist refugees in finding asylum in Europe. The U.S. State dept. issued a statement warning U.S. citizens that the protests could turn violent. The statement estimated that anywhere from 300 to 1000 supporters would be at the protests, which took place at various locations around the city center. Those at the gathering carried Czech flags as well as anti-EU and anti-muslim materials, with some signs at the protest reading “Thank you Mr. President that defends 80 percent of the citizens. We issue you a green card!” and “I do not want to be a citizen of the euro! I do not eat euro food! I do not live in the euro caliphate! I am Czech and a patriot!”
New Mexico’s women’s tennis suffered its first loss of the season in Minnesota Saturday, and could not salvage a split on Sunday. The Lobos got off to a rough start at the Courtside Classic on Saturday against 29th ranked Mississippi State. The Bulldogs played from ahead and eventually defeated New Mexico 6-1.
A local wrestling company overcame the odds to make a return to the ring on Saturday. John Gruen, a former UNM student, started Destiny Wrestling Organization with several of his friends in 2006. He said they all loved wrestling and decided to work together to take a chance. “We wanted to bring it back to the glory days when the Civic Center was still around and Rocky Romero, Terry Funk and Dory Funk used to come down from Amarillo and wrestle,” Gruen said.
Facebook friend posted a message on Thursday about Roosh V. and the ill-fated Return of Kings meet-up event. In it, he said that, while the event was canceled, men who had planned to participate were instead going to ”...’pick up’ (read: coerce and rape) women at nearby bars.” I asked the poster, who thinks of himself as an ally for women, for his source on the information, and instead of supplying a link or a name, he became defensive and ultimately he deleted my comments. Later that same day, the U.K. tabloid website Daily Mail published an article with the headline “Not so cool now! Pro-rape pick-up artist pictured in a sweat-stained T-shirt at the door of his mother’s home (where he lives in the BASEMENT!).” The included photo shows the self-identified men’s rights activist speaking to police at his door wearing – gasp – a T-shirt and shorts. No mention was made of how they had determined he lived in his mother’s basement.
UNM is holding one of the biggest career fairs in the state this Tuesday. The Office of Career Services at UNM is hosting the annual Career Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SUB ballrooms, offering jobs to students of all levels and majors. Jenna Crabb, director of career services and interim dean of students, said there are going to be 86 employers onsite at this year’s event.
If you could change one thing about UNM what would that be?
Fighting cancer is a battle afflicted children cannot fight alone, said Julia Grimes, director of Child Life at the UNM Children’s Hospital. Emotional support is an important part of rehabilitation. Which is why staff members of the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office, as part of the nationwide Jared Box Project, took the time to put together care packages filled with toys for young cancer patients at UNM Hospital. Grimes said it is difficult to articulate the impact made by the goodies given to the children at the hospital, most of whom are long-term patients who range in age from 18 months to 20 years old.
At least 50 protesters – made up of men, women, young and old – gathered in front of Central Avenue near the UNM Bookstore Saturday evening in opposition to self-proclaimed “neomasculinist” Darush “Roosh V” Valizadeh’s now-cancelled follower meetups, one of which was scheduled to begin at that location. The protest mobilized in a matter of minutes just before 8 p.m., the time during which Valizadeh blogged that his followers should rendezvous for a meeting. Valizadeh wrote on his blog that he hoped these meetings would result in the start of several “tribes” of like-minded followers around the world. He then announced on social media that these meetings – which he dubbed International Meetup Day – were cancelled because he was concerned about the safety of those attending.
One botched inbound play from New Mexico, and undefeated San Diego State survives another one. The opportunity to hand the Aztecs its first Mountain West loss and close within one game fell a play short Saturday afternoon at Viejas Arena in San Diego, as the Lobos dropped a heartbreaker 78-71.
