For U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., the government should strive to enhance national security without infringing on privacy rights. On Friday morning, Heinrich addressed UNM students on the topic of cyber security, describing it as a vital field in need of reform.
Albuquerque residents rallied at Civic Plaza Saturday afternoon to discuss the importance of the Albuquerque Police Department, to remember fallen officers and demonstrate their support for the APD. About 200 veterans, business owners and other attendees met at 10 a.m. to praise and defend the officers.
As the Department of Justice last week agreed that the Albuquerque Police Department exercises excessive force, protests against police raged on. About 100 people rallied in front of City Hall on Saturday afternoon to continue to peacefully protest APD’s excessive use of force.

Editor, I retired from UNM a year ago. I am one of the 600 people under age 65 who have health care from the University. People seem to forget that the University opted out of the State of New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority. The University could save the couple of percent cost and do it by itself cheaper than figured.
Editor, UNM Regents and Administration are having a difficult time finding $6 million to give UNM staff a 2 percent raise and faculty a 3 percent raise without raising student tuition rates again. According to New Mexico Watchdog, over the past 15 years UNM tuition rates for New Mexico residents have increased by a whopping 170 percent.

New Mexico center Alex Kirk has made his decision: he will forgo his senior season and declare for the NBA Draft. The Lobos men’s basketball Twitter account, @UNMHoops, announced the decision Friday afternoon after reports surfaced Kirk was leaving.
President-elect Texanna Martin will succeed Priscila Poliana as the next president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association. Martin, who is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration, won the position Thursday evening with 198 out of the 389 votes cast for president.
