Studying the efficiency of red-light cameras

If you’ve ever accidentally coasted through a yellow light below a red-light camera, the anxiety you once felt might be a thing of the past. Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is negotiating the terms of a contract with the UNM Institute for Social Research to test whether the cameras actually make Albuquerque’s streets safer. Berry will decide whether to remove the cameras based on the ISR study, said T.J.

The building — across from Hokona Hall — will be open for classes in the fall semester, and its use of energy efficient features may earn it a rating of platinum in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system by the U.S.

Eco-Reps to lead campus in sustainability

Eco-Representatives unite! Last spring, the Research Service Learning Program collaborated with the Office of Sustainability to create a set of classes that will keep the environmental needs of the campus in mind. In the fall, graduate teaching assistant Andrew Marcum, from the Research Service Learning Program, taught a course that involved the Office of Sustainability.

Allowing different opinions on campus helps broaden views

Editor, In response to David Luna’s letter in the Daily Lobo on Monday, “UNM should not allow hatemongering on campus,” I wish to add a different argument as to why Shawn the Baptist should be allowed to speak on campus. You cannot use the argument of free speech without accepting the term in its entirety.

Ex-presidential candidate urges students to organize Former presidential candidate Howard Dean visited campus Tuesday to drum up Democratic support in New Mexico. Students gathered in the SUB Theater to hear Dean speak about national issues including health care and political participation. “Being in a democracy requires obligations, not just freedoms,” Dean said.

Santa Ana evacuated after early-morning fire

First-floor residents of Santa Ana Hall awoke at 4 a.m. Tuesday to screaming fire alarms and billowing smoke. A bulletin board on the east end of the first floor caught on fire, according to UNMPD spokesman Robert Haarhues.

Singled-out Valentine's activities for couples

Something showy Give your sweetheart a hip-hopping, heart-stopping good time at the Launchpad on Monday for the comeback tour of Eyedea and Abilities. The hip-hop group is part of the Rhymesayers Entertainment label and released its latest album, “By the Throat,” in July. Micheal Larsen, vocalist for the band, said crowds haven’t always been supportive of his music and performing. “I’ve had people throwing food at me, throwing golf balls at me,” Larsen said.

MyUNM portal to go down for upgrades

If you find yourself unable to log into MyUNM this weekend, don’t panic. The MyUNM portal is undergoing an internal update in preparation for a later Banner upgrade, said Vanessa Baca, IT communication specialist. “We are getting a new version of MyUNM in order for it to work in compliance with the new upgraded version of Banner 8,” she said.

Projected allocations for research grants

UNM will receive more than $37 million in federal stimulus funding for research initiatives. The money, which came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is split between main campus and the Health Sciences Center.

Schmidly to hire unpaid advisers

President Schmidly announced today the creation of a team of advisers who aim to help the administration consolidate its budget during times of economic hardship. The “President’s Strategic Advisory Team” will be made up of unpaid students, staff and faculty.
