Artist rewards creative peace efforts

Artist Paul Ré established a peace prize in 2007 for UNM affiliates, including students, who work toward conflict prevention and are at the creative forefronts of their fields. "Persons in any field of endeavor can contribute to peace in the world," Ré said.

H1N1 confirmed on campus

Swine flu has reached UNM's main campus. A case of the H1N1 virus was confirmed in a student living in Hokona Hall, according to a University e-mail alert released Wednesday evening. The student has recovered and is now well, according to the e-mail.

Artest doesn't deserve to be hounded by refs

Ron Artest isn't the NBA's resident reprobate. He isn't a pit bull on a short leash. In fact, he's more Ronald McDonald than Ron the Ripper. Yet, he's being treated like a criminal. Truthfully, I feel for Artest. I'm not an Artest apologist, but I don't believe what happened in Detroit was entirely his fault.

Filmmakers set out to show the real Pakistan

In response to an October 2007 Newsweek cover article calling Pakistan "the most dangerous country in the world," Nasir Khan and Ayesha Khan decided to make a documentary about life in Pakistan. "I had just come back from (Pakistan), and there was nothing particularly dangerous going on there at the time," executive producer Ayesha said.

Lobos get nothing but net at NCAAs

Ousted. The UNM men's tennis visit to the NCAA Tournament was short and unsatisfying. The Lobos were kicked to the curb by 33rd-ranked Minnesota 4-0 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles. UNM finishes the year 20-6 overall. Despite the lopsided score, head coach Alan Dils said he couldn't fault his team.

'Star Trek' a mix of wit, modern action

"Star Trek" has made the crossover from that show your geeky friend used to watch into the modern, action-packed movie. With special effects and witty one-liners, the movie, directed by J.J. Abrams, is now more accessible to moviegoers of all ages. The older "Star Trek" movies have a distinct look that matches the original series.

Vanessa Strobbe Sports guru Vanessa Strobbe said she gets her life drive from God. "God gave me a lot of gifts," she said. "And, if I don't use them to my full ability, I feel like I'm wasting them. There are a lot of people who would kill for some things, and it would be slapping them in the face if I didn't capitalize on everything I was blessed with.

Speaker will discuss root of conflict in Middle East

Military and globalization expert Jimmy Johnson will speak at the Albuquerque Peace and Justice Center about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on May 18. Janice Hart, who helped organize the event, said Johnson is a distinguished member of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and he will talk about the origins of the dispute.

Steve Saunders is having a Most Valuable Player-caliber season in the mold of his favorite athlete - LeBron James. But Saunders isn't dominating the court; he's unmatched on the golf course. Saunders won the Mountain West Conference Golf Championships in Tucson, Ariz.

Flamenco students reflect on why they flocked

Montserrat Andreys moved from Chicago to study flamenco at UNM, where the dance program has gained notoriety through the annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque. "I found a Web site about the festival, and the info in the festival led me to find the flamenco program at UNM," Andreys said.

Male professors should be run through sheep dip, shot

Editor, Speaking as a male faculty member, I would say most of us men deserve to be put down. I think that's the compassionate, sensible, likeable and pleasant thing to do. Most male professors spend their days drooling away in their offices or sucking up valuable classroom space.
