Students, faculty recalled from Mexico

President David Schmidly has imposed restrictions on faculty travel in response to the swine flu. Schmidly said in his Monday morning message that "due to increased risks associated with the H1N1 influenza World Health Organization level 5 advisory and the current Center for Disease Control travel advisory," UNM would immediately suspend all travel to Mexico.

Swine flu spread affects schools, state

New Mexico saw its first confirmed case of swine flu on Saturday, but many UNM students say they aren't concerned. "I really haven't been paying attention to it, to be honest," said freshman Elyse Jalbert. The New Mexico Department of Health reported on May 2 that an 18-year-old male from Valencia County had the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.

Republicans need to get over Obama's win, prepare for '12

Editor, You lost. Get over it. This letter is directed at Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Newt Gingrich, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, among others. I'm not sure if you recall this, but there was a democratically held presidential election in November. We hold one of these things every four years, and we have for more than 200 years now.

With new editor at the helm, Lobo should focus on campus

Editor, I want to say congratulations to Rachel Hill for becoming the new editor-in-chief of the Daily Lobo. I have seen genuine improvement in the Lobo over the past year, and I'm hopeful that Hill's guidance will make the paper better than ever. With this change in leadership, this seems as good a time as any to explain one of my pet peeves with the Lobo, one that I think has been getting better recently, but should still be addressed.

Budget cuts ahead for UNM branches

UNM's 2009-10 budget expenses are about 5.2 percent higher than the previous year, an increase of $106 million, but many branch campuses will get less money. The budget was approved by the Board of Regents on Friday. Regent Jack Fortner said he expects to revisit the budget in the future to make adjustments for further state cuts.

Obama's respect toward other nations a welcome change

Editor, After reading Daniel Martinez's letter, I had a nice, long laugh at the pure foolishness that he was spewing as what, I imagine, was supposed to be some sort of argument. It absolutely baffles me that people want to somehow correlate a simple formality - a meet and greet - as some sort of demeaning process for the United States.

The Runnin' Rebels took the weekend series, 2-1, and won 13-11 in extra innings on Sunday. On Saturday, the Lobos out-hit the Runnin' Rebels 12-8, but UNM walked and plunked too many batsmen.

Smaller sports should look to Marx to understand their place

Karl Marx once told us that capitalism is "vampire-like," and that it lives only by draining the jugular of labor. A century later, mosquitoes - the bourgeois - are still sucking off oxen - the proletariat - and complaining about the blood quality. On Monday, Vanessa Strobbe wrote a column addressing the uneven distribution of funds among UNM's varsity sports.

A win by UNM senior javelin thrower Anthony Fairbanks broke the gloom of a rainy day at the Don Kirby Memorial Invitational. Three lightning delays halted action for more than an hour and a half at the UNM Track Stadium, but Fairbanks wasn't affected by the distractions.

Obama's stimulus plan won't benefit people on Main Street

Editor, After numerous months of attempted interpretation, I finally realized what President Obama meant by his campaign slogans "hope" and "change." I heard a professor on TV on Tuesday talking about how the recent stimulus package is exactly what America needs and that, as a result, change is on the way.

Professors must allow sick days to students with flu symptoms

Editor, Many of us are deeply concerned about the welfare of this country's health - especially with the arrival of the new strain of flu: H1N1 (swine flu). I am very concerned about my fellow students. Professors, please give students the time off and chance to retake exams if students are presenting symptoms or have been exposed to the flu virus without red tape and superfluous hoop jumping.
